Chapter 2 - The Calculated Deception

“She’s a child, Danielle,” Cole said, his voice dangerously level. “Her mother is an employee here. I found her abandoned in the cold.”

Danielle’s expression didn't soften. Instead, she took a step closer, lowering her voice so the guests wouldn't hear. “You’re making a scene. And you look like a vagrant. I’m hosting the charity board meeting in twenty minutes. Do you have any idea how this looks?”

“I don’t care how it looks,” Cole said, moving to side-step her. “I care where Maria Delgado is. Why was her child left outside?”

Danielle blocked his path, her face twisting into a mask of faux-distress. She reached out, placing a hand on her stomach. It was a gesture he had never seen her do before.

“Cole, wait. We need to talk. I didn't want to tell you like this, not here in the lobby, but… I’m pregnant.”

The world seemed to stop. Cole froze, Lily heavy in his arms. “What?”

“I’m pregnant, Cole,” Danielle said, her voice trembling—a perfectly rehearsed tremor. “That’s why I was running late. I was at the doctor. I’m terrified. And you’re out here chasing after… staff.”

Cole felt a sickening lurch in his gut. The timing. The suddenness. He looked at her—the pristine makeup, the cold eyes—and for the first time, he didn't see a partner. He saw a strategist.

“We’ll discuss this later,” Cole said, his voice flat. “Right now, I need to find the staff manager.”

“She’s gone, Cole!” Danielle snapped, her composure slipping. “The maid. She was fired. She was stealing—or something. I don’t know, I told the manager to handle it. She was a liability.”

Cole felt the room tilt. “You told the manager?”

“I run the hospitality branding for this hotel, Cole! I have a say in who represents us. She was bringing a child to work. It’s unprofessional.”

Cole turned and walked past her, ignoring her cries of “Cole, stop!” He didn't head to the office. He headed to the security room. He was done playing the role of the nice, accessible owner. It was time to remind everyone who held the keys to the kingdom.
