Chapter 5 - The Unmasking
The chaos that followed was beautiful.
Reporters, who had been invited to cover the engagement, suddenly found a much bigger story. The donors, who valued their own public image above all else, began to pull away from Danielle as if she were contagious.
Danielle screamed, her mask finally shattering. “You’re nothing without me! You’re just a soft-hearted fool who cares more about maids than billions!”
“I’m a man who knows the difference between a building and a home,” Cole said. He turned to the room. “Maria Delgado was fired because she saw something she shouldn't have. She saw Danielle and her assistant embezzling from the employee welfare fund to pay for these ‘appropriate’ parties.”
He didn't wait for the police. He had already called them.
As the officers entered, Danielle was flanked by her lawyers, but even they looked like they were looking for the nearest exit.
In the back of the room, near the doors, Maria Delgado stood. She had been watching from the service entrance, hesitant to enter, until she saw Cole spot her.
He didn't cross the room to her. He didn't make a scene. He simply walked toward her, and when he reached her, he leaned down.

Maria looked at him, her eyes searching his. She wasn't just a maid anymore; she was a woman who had survived a billionaire’s wrath and was still standing. “You’re not the one who needs to apologize, Mr. Merritt.”
