Chapter 2 - The Interview and the Golden CollarThe headquarters of Horizon Crown Financial rose sixty stories above downtown Bellhaven—a gleaming tower of blue glass and brushed steel that dominated the skyline.

Claire stood in the marble lobby at quarter to four, smoothing down the skirt of her plain navy-blue blazer. The outfit was three years old, bought off a discount rack during her final semester of college, but she had ironed it until the seams were crisp.
In her purse lay her remaining funds: Zero dollars.
She had spent her last ten dollars that morning on bus fare and a dry-cleaned shirt for Adrian, who had insisted on walking her to the bus stop. Before she boarded, he had adjusted her collar, looked her straight in the eye, and whispered four words that had echoed in her mind all afternoon:
Look for the discrepancy.
Now, sitting in a plush leather chair on the forty-fifth floor, Claire waited for her name to be called.
The door to the inner executive suite opened, and a sharp-looking woman with a headset stepped out. "Claire Bennett?"
"Yes," Claire said, standing up quickly.
"Mr. Sterling will see you now."
Claire paused. "Mr. Sterling? I thought I was interviewing with Mrs. Gable in Human Resources."
"Plans changed," the assistant said briskly, gesturing into the office. "Mr. Julian Sterling is overseeing final onboarding for the audit department today."
Claire’s heart hammered against her ribs as she walked into the sprawling corner office.
Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a sweeping view of the city. Behind a massive mahogany desk sat Julian Sterling—her sister Monica’s fiancé. He was dressed in a three-thousand-dollar tailored grey suit, his blonde hair slicked back, a diamond-encrusted watch glittering on his wrist. Sitting on the couch nearby, holding a manicured cup of espresso, was Monica herself.
When Monica saw Claire walk through the door, she nearly choked on her drink.
"Claire?" Monica gasped, sitting up straight. "What on earth are you doing here?"
Julian looked up from his iPad, his sharp features twisting into a mixture of amusement and irritation. "Ah. The younger sister. I didn't realize you were the 'C. Bennett' on my desk for the junior audit position."
Claire swallowed her pride, standing straight. "Good afternoon, Mr. Sterling. Monica."
Monica stood up, walking over to Julian's desk, her heels clicking loudly against the polished hardwood. "Julian, this is ridiculous. Claire isn't qualified for Horizon Crown. She worked at a mid-tier accounting firm in Dundalk until last month."
"I managed the forensic ledgers for thirty corporate accounts, Monica," Claire said quietly, keeping her tone strictly professional. "And I graduated top of my class at Georgia State."
Julian leaned back in his chair, folding his hands over his stomach. A condescending smirk touched his lips. "It's fine, babe. In fact, it might be convenient. Having family in the audit department means we can count on complete... discretion during the merger transition."
He tossed a thick leather-bound folder across the desk toward Claire.
"This is the preliminary asset audit for Vance Global Capital's software division," Julian said casually. "Harrison Vance’s team submitted it this morning. Look it over. If you can sign off on the tax compliance column by five o'clock, the job is yours. Starting salary is eighty-five thousand, plus bonuses."
Claire looked at the folder, then at Julian.
Eighty-five thousand dollars. It was more money than she had ever seen in her life. It meant paying off her student loans, moving out of her cramped apartment, and never having to worry about choosing between groceries and gasoline again.
She opened the folder.
Pages of complex financial spreadsheets stretched before her. Revenue streams, offshore licensing fees, amortization schedules. To an average accountant, it looked flawless—a juggernaut of corporate profitability.
Then Adrian’s voice echoed in her mind: Look for the discrepancy.
Claire’s eyes scanned the numbers. Her specialized background in forensic ledgers kicked in. She tracked the licensing revenue for the Aegis software architecture across three separate columns.
Her breath hitched.
The intellectual property royalties weren't being credited to Vance Global Capital’s operating account. They were being routed through an unlisted shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under the code name Project Nemesis. More importantly, the primary cryptographic key controlling the software’s core source code wasn't owned by Harrison Vance at all.
It was held in an irrevocable personal trust owned by a single individual: Adrian Vance-Cole.
Claire’s eyes widened.
Vance-Cole.
Adrian hadn't just been Harrison Vance’s business partner. He was Harrison Vance’s estranged younger half-brother—the legitimate heir to the original Cole technology estate that Harrison had systematically dismantled.
Claire slowly closed the folder.
"Well?" Julian asked, tapping his pen against his desk. "Can you sign off on it?"
Monica smirked. "Don't overwhelm her, Julian. She probably doesn't even know how to read an offshore amortization matrix."
Claire looked up, her gaze shifting from her sister to Julian.
If she signed this document, she would be certifying a fraudulent asset transfer that helped Harrison Vance steal billions from Adrian forever. She would get eighty-five thousand dollars, a shiny career, and her sister’s approval.
If she refused, she would walk out of this building with zero dollars in her bank account and no job.
Claire closed her purse, her fingers gripping the strap until her knuckles turned white.
"I can't sign this, Mr. Sterling," Claire said, her voice clear and unwavering.
Julian’s smirk vanished. "What did you say?"
"The intellectual property titles are encumbered," Claire stated calmly. "The core architecture is bound to an irrevocable trust that hasn't been liquidated. If Horizon Crown executes this merger tomorrow, you will be acquiring billions of dollars in stolen liabilities."
Monica gasped. "Claire, are you insane?! You're turning down eighty-five thousand dollars because you think you found a typo?!"
Julian stood up slowly, his face darkening with rage. "You stupid, arrogant little girl. You think you know more than Harrison Vance’s legal team? You're not getting this job. In fact, I’ll make sure your name is blacklisted from every accounting firm in this state."
"I’d rather be blacklisted than complicit in corporate fraud," Claire said quietly.
She turned on her heel and walked out of the office, her chin held high, ignoring her sister’s furious shouts echoing down the hallway.
When she reached the street outside, the cold rain was falling hard. Claire stood beneath the awning of the gleaming skyscraper, her chest heaving, tears finally spilling down her cheeks.
She was broke. She was ruined. She had chosen integrity over survival.
A black sleek Maybach pulled up to the curb directly in front of her.
The tinted rear window rolled down slowly.
Sitting in the back seat, wearing a bespoke charcoal-grey suit, a dark silk tie, and a silver timepiece that cost more than a house, was Adrian.

He looked at her, his gray eyes shining with an immense, breathtaking warmth.
"Get in, Claire," Adrian said softly. "It's time to take what's ours."
