Chapter 5 - The Wedding and the ChairSaturday evening arrived with an air of electric tension that gripped the entire city of Bellhaven.

The grand ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton had been transformed into a breathtaking palace of white roses, gold leaf, and crystal chandeliers. Over five hundred elite guests filled the room—senators, venture capitalists, international shipping magnates, and news anchors covering the high-profile merger between Sterling Logistics and Vance Global Capital.
Harrison Vance stood near the grand stage, wearing a double-breasted tuxedo, holding a glass of scotch, chatting smugly with board members.
At the center head table sat the bridal party. Monica looked stunning in her twenty-thousand-dollar lace wedding dress, but her expression was tense, her eyes darting nervously toward the entrance every few seconds. Julian sat beside her, drinking heavily, his knuckles white around his glass.
Claire sat at a secondary table near the front, dressed in a breathtaking sapphire-blue gown that highlighted her delicate features. Sitting beside her was Adrian, looking every bit the ruthless titan of industry he had been born to be.
The master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the wedding reception of Julian Sterling and Monica Bennett, and the historic announcement of the Vance-Sterling Global merger!"
The room erupted into applause. Harrison Vance walked up onto the stage, taking the microphone with a triumphant grin.
"Thank you, everyone," Harrison boomed into the mic. "Tonight, we celebrate love, family, and the future of global logistics. The Aegis software platform will officially go public at midnight, launching a new era of unprecedented profitability!"
"Is that so, Harrison?"
A quiet, powerful voice echoed through the house speakers.
Harrison’s smile froze. He looked down toward the center aisle.
Adrian stood up slowly from his table. He adjusted his jacket, his presence commanding absolute silence across the five hundred guests.
Harrison’s face turned deathly pale. "Adrian? How... how did you get in here?"
"I own thirty percent of the hotel chain, Harrison," Adrian said calmly, walking slowly toward the stage. "And more importantly, I own the core repository of Aegis."
Julian slammed his fist onto the table, standing up. "Security! Get him out! He's ruined my wedding night enough!"
Four heavy security guards stepped forward, but before they could reach Adrian, Claire stood up from her seat.
She walked gracefully over to a small side table where an extra gilded mahogany chair sat. She picked up the heavy chair herself, intending to bring it forward for Adrian to sit near the front podium.
"Stop her!" Monica shrieked from the bridal table, her voice shrill with embarrassment. "Look at her! Carrying furniture like a common servant! She's embarrassing my entire family at my own wedding!"
Julian rushed over, grabbing the edge of the chair, trying to jerk it out of Claire's hands. "Drop it, Claire! You're a disgraced auditor! You don't belong in this room, and you certainly don't get to bring chairs to the executive table!"
Harrison Vance sneered from the stage. "Let the beggar's girl stand! She isn't worthy of a seat among billionaires!"
The room fell into a tense, breathless quiet as several snobbish elites laughed mockingly at Claire.
Adrian’s gray eyes flashed with a lethal, terrifying rage.
He stepped between Julian and Claire, placing his hand over Julian's wrist. The force of Adrian's grip was so sudden and absolute that Julian let out a sharp cry of pain, instantly releasing the chair.
Adrian gently took the heavy chair from Claire's hands. He carried it himself, placing it directly at the center of the main stage, right beside Harrison Vance’s podium.
Then, Adrian turned to the crowd of billionaires, his voice cutting through the hall like a razor blade.
"None of you are fit to breathe the same air as this woman," Adrian declared, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "When I had nothing, when I sat in the dirt on Jefferson Avenue, every single 'billionaire' in this room walked past me. Your socialites filmed me for jokes. Your executives tried to steal my life's work."
He pointed a finger directly at Harrison Vance and Julian Sterling.
"Claire Bennett was the only person in this city who gave me her last twelve dollars," Adrian continued, his voice shaking with intense passion. "She chose integrity over an eighty-thousand-dollar bribe from Julian Sterling. She refused to sign a fraudulent document that would have validated Harrison Vance's theft."
Harrison sweated profusely through his collar. "She's lying! She has no proof!"
Claire stepped up onto the stage beside Adrian. She pulled a encrypted flash drive from her purse and plugged it into the main projection console connected to the ballroom's massive LED screens.
"The proof is right here," Claire said clearly, her voice echoing across the silent room.
The screens lit up, displaying the internal forensic ledgers of Vance Global Capital. The shell accounts, the illegal offshore routing, the forged signatures, and the hidden trust documents instantly flashed in high definition for every investor, news camera, and board member to see.
Gasps of horror erupted through the crowd.
"Federal agents are already waiting in the lobby, Harrison," Adrian said coldly, looking at his half-brother. "The SEC frozen all Vance Global accounts ten minutes ago. You are ruined."
Harrison dropped his glass of scotch. It shattered against the floorboards.
Two federal marshals stepped through the double doors of the ballroom, walking straight up the aisle, handcuffs drawn. Within seconds, Harrison Vance was restrained and led out of the building in front of the entire state elite.
Julian Sterling sank into his chair, his face completely white. His father, Arthur Sterling, turned to him with pure fury.
"The merger is off!" Arthur roared at his son. "And you are stripped of your vice presidency at Sterling Logistics! You've ruined us!"
Monica fell back onto her seat, sobbing uncontrollably into her white lace dress, her dream of entering high society crumbling into dust before her eyes.
Adrian turned away from the chaos. He reached out and took Claire's hand, leading her toward the mahogany chair he had placed at the center of the stage.

He looked at her with an expression of pure, overwhelming devotion.
"Sit, Claire," Adrian whispered gently. "You earned the highest seat in this room."
