Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage ReopenedWithin an hour, Norah found herself sitting in the back of the luxurious Maybach, flanked by her two bewildered sons, while Dominic sat opposite them in absolute silence. The rusted station wagon had been left behind in the grocery store lot, secured by one of Dominic’s trusted lieutenants, and all their meager belongings had already been transferred into the boot of an escort vehicle.

They weren't being kidnapped—not technically. But the armed guards trailing behind them in two armored SUVs left no doubt about the reality of their situation.

"Where are we going?" Noah asked, clutching a small plastic dinosaur he had rescued from the diner booth.

"To a safe place, Noah," Dominic answered softly, never taking his eyes off Norah. "A place where it's warm, where you'll have your own rooms, and where your mom won't have to work in a diner anymore."

"I like the diner," Noah mumbled, leaning sleepily against Norah’s shoulder.

Norah glared across the plush leather interior at Dominic. "You think buying us a house or throwing money at us fixes what you broke? You think four years of terror, panic attacks, and scrubbing grease off my hands can be erased with a fleet of luxury cars?"

"No," Dominic said quietly, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his hands clasped together. "I don't think anything can fix what I broke, Norah. I was arrogant. I was careless. I let a parasite into my home and cost myself the only thing that ever mattered to me. I spent fourteen hundred days looking for you. Every single night, I stared at that ultrasound photo you left on my desk."

Norah’s breath hitched. "You kept it?"

"It’s framed in my private study," Dominic said, his voice heavy with remorse. "The only thing left in that room that wasn't scrubbed clean of my past mistakes. I didn't bring you here to lock you in a cage, Norah. Look at me. Truly look at me."

She looked. Beneath the cold exterior, beneath the mafia boss persona and the tailored suits, she saw exhaustion. She saw a man who had hunted ghosts for years and had finally found his redemption sitting right in front of him.

"I am giving you a choice," Dominic continued, his gaze steady. "You can take the boys and live in any estate I own, completely independent of me, with armed security to ensure nobody ever touches a hair on your heads. Or... you can let me earn my way back. Let me prove that the man who destroyed your life four years ago died the second you walked out that door."

The car glided smoothly through the gates of a sprawling, private coastal estate overlooking the crashing Pacific waves—a fortress of stone, glass, and absolute safety.
