Chapter 4 - The Battle for the TruthOver the next two weeks, the Fourth Floor Surgical Unit of Chicago General Hospital became a fortress.

I revoked my parents’ executive privileges at the hospital, hired a private, independent security firm to guard the doors of both the NICU and Hannah’s private room, and took an indefinite leave of absence from my surgical duties to spend twenty-four hours a day beside my family.

Hannah’s physical recovery was miraculous.

Within seven days, she was out of bed, walking down the hall to the NICU with me twice a day to hold our newborn babies.

We named our son Caleb Ethan Harrison and our daughter Lily Hannah Harrison.

Sitting in the warm, quiet nursery of the NICU, watching Hannah hold three-pound Caleb against her bare skin while I held tiny Lily against my chest, felt like stepping into a paradise I had done nothing to deserve.

"Look at his toes, Ethan," Hannah whispered, a breathtaking, radiant smile illuminating her face in the soft golden light of the afternoon sun. "He has your long toes."

"And she has your stubborn chin," I chuckled softly, looking down at Lily, who was fast asleep, letting out soft, rhythmic sighs against my thumb.

Hannah’s smile faded slightly, replaced by a quiet, thoughtful expression. She looked across at me, her brown eyes searching my face.

"Ethan?"

"Yeah?"

"What happens when we leave the hospital?" she asked quietly. "Your father has endless resources. His lawyers have already filed three motions in probate court trying to challenge the babies' paternity records."

"They won't get past the front door of the courthouse, Hannah," a deep voice interrupted from the doorway.

Julian Vance walked into the room, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, holding a thick leather briefcase.

He offered Hannah a respectful bow of his head before turning to me. "It’s done, Ethan. The State's Attorney’s Office just signed off on the federal indictment."

Hannah gasped softly. "Indictment?"

Julian pulled out a stack of legal documents and laid them on the small table beside us. "We didn't just present the evidence of the frame-job from five years ago. When I raided Harrison Biotech's compliance databases using Ethan's security tokens, I found three decades of systematic tax evasion, illegal offshore clinical trials in South America, and bribery of state medical inspectors."

I looked up at Julian. "And my father?"

"Richard Harrison was arrested an hour ago at his Lake Forest estate," Julian reported smoothly. "Federal agents handcuffed him on his front lawn in front of three news crews. Eleanor has been named as a co-conspirator for financial fraud and evidence tampering. Their assets have been frozen by federal order."

Hannah set little Caleb gently back into his incubator, her hands shaking with emotion. "It’s really over...? They can't touch us anymore?"

"They’re going to federal prison, Hannah," Julian said gently, looking at her with deep respect. "And the State’s Attorney has already drafted a public apology and a multi-million-dollar restitution settlement from the company’s remaining liquidated assets to compensate you for five years of wrongful persecution."

Hannah covered her mouth with her hands, tears spilling over her lashes.

I set little Lily safely in her incubator, stood up, and wrapped my arms around Hannah, pulling her tight against my chest. She buried her face in my shoulder, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated relief—the heavy, suffocating weight of five years of fear and poverty lifting off her shoulders forever.

"You're safe, Hannah," I whispered into her soft hair, kissing the top of her head. "You and the babies are completely free."
