Chapter 1 - The Door in the AlleyThe rain had turned into a steady, freezing drizzle as Alessandro walked down the narrow, trash-littered alley of the South Bronx, holding seven-year-old Emma’s tiny, cold hand.

His two bodyguards, Luca and Matteo, followed three paces behind, their hands resting inside their heavy overcoats over suppressed firearms. The tension in the air was so thick it felt as though a single loud sound would shatter the street like brittle glass.

Emma led them past crumbling brick facades, rusted fire escapes, and overflowing industrial dumpsters. She stopped in front of a weathered, four-story tenement building with cracked green paint peeling off the wooden doorframe.

"Here," Emma whispered, pointing her small finger at a steel basement door half-hidden behind a stack of discarded wooden pallets. "We live on the bottom. The man with the black van brings food every Tuesday."

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "What man, Emma?"

"The man with the star on his neck," Emma replied simply, shifting her bare feet on the wet concrete. "Mama says we aren't allowed to talk to him. But he leaves boxes of milk and bread. And he checks on the boy."

Alessandro felt a surge of cold fury. A star on his neck.

Only three men in his inner circle bore that specific tattoo—the mark of the Stellato Guards, the elite personal security force assigned to protect the outer perimeter of the Moretti estate on Long Island.

Someone inside his own house hadn't just betrayed him. They had turned his missing son into a hidden prisoner in a forgotten basement in the Bronx.

"Luca," Alessandro said softly, his voice cutting through the damp air like a razor.

"Yes, Don Alessandro?" Luca stepped forward, his face pale and sharp.

"Signal the convoy. I want thirty men surrounding this entire block within five minutes. No one enters. No one leaves."

"Understood, sir." Luca pulled out an encrypted radio and began issuing swift, silent orders.

Alessandro knelt beside Emma, reaching into his pocket to pull out a pristine white silk handkerchief. He gently wiped the rain and dirt from her bare feet, then pulled off his own cashmere scarf and wrapped it securely around her small shoulders.

"Emma," he said, looking straight into her innocent brown eyes. "Is your mother inside?"

"Yes," she nodded. "She's making soup."

"Go inside first," Alessandro instructed gently. "Tell your mother that a friend has come to visit. Do not be afraid of the noise."

Emma nodded, took a step toward the steel door, and turned the heavy brass handle. The door creaked open, revealing a dark, narrow hallway that smelled of damp concrete, boiled cabbage, and old radiator steam.

Alessandro stood up, his tall frame blocking out the faint street light. He drew a custom, silent sidearm from his shoulder holster, checking the chamber with practiced, deadly efficiency.

"Matteo," Alessandro whispered.

"Sir?"

"If my son is behind that door... whatever happens next, you make sure the girl and her mother are protected."

"On my life, boss."

Alessandro took a deep breath, his heart hammering against his ribs like a war drum, and stepped into the darkness of the basement corridor.
