Chapter 2 - THE CRUMBLING EMPIRE

Diane stood frozen against the delivery room door.
The cold, cruel matriarch who had spent the last seven years mocking my modest background, criticizing my clothes, and treating me like an intruder in the prestigious Vance family was now trembling like a leaf in an autumn wind.
Her eyes darted frantically around the room—from Dr. Matthews, to the two nurses who were trying and failing to hide their shock, to her only son, who was staring at her as if she were a total stranger.
"Ryan..." Diane stammered, her voice stripped of all its habitual polished authority. "Ryan, listen to me... this doctor is mistaken! The hospital lab made a mistake! They mixed up the blood samples!"
"Mrs. Vance," Dr. Matthews stated firmly, folding his arms across his chest. "Our lab re-ran your son's blood panel three times to verify the chimerism markers before I stepped foot back in this room. There is no mix-up. The biological facts are absolute."
"Who was he, Mom?!" Ryan roared, stepping away from my bedside, taking two long, aggressive strides toward his mother.
I pulled my baby closer to my chest, shielding her tiny ears from the deafening echo of Ryan's shout.
"Ryan, please!" Diane cried out, holding her hands up defensively. "Not here! Not in front of these people! This is a private family matter!"
"Private?!" Ryan sneered, a bitter, hysterical laugh breaking from his throat. "You just accused my wife of infidelity in front of an entire medical team! You tried to brand my innocent newborn daughter a bastard thirty seconds after she was born! And now you want privacy?!"
"Arthur was your father!" Diane lied desperately, tears finally spilling over her heavy makeup, running down her wrinkled cheeks. "He raised you! He gave you his name! He gave you our family's fortune!"
"He raised me under a lie!" Ryan yelled, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. "Did Dad know?! Did Arthur know I wasn't his son?!"
Diane swallowed hard, looking down at the linoleum floor, incapable of meeting her son's eyes.
Her silence was the most terrifying answer possible.
"Oh my God..." Ryan whispered, staggering back a step, running both hands through his blond hair. "He didn't know. You lied to Arthur for his entire life. You lied to me for my entire life."
"Arthur couldn't give me children!" Diane suddenly shrieked, her panic breaking into a defensive, venomous rage. "He was infertile, Ryan! I discovered it two years after we married! Do you have any idea what would have happened to me if the Vance family found out I couldn't produce an heir?! Arthur's parents would have stripped me of everything! They would have divorced me and thrown me out on the street with nothing!"
"So you slept with another man to get pregnant and passed his child off as Arthur's?!" Ryan asked, his tone dripping with absolute disgust.
"I did what I had to do to protect my position!" Diane yelled back, no longer denying it. "I secured the Vance bloodline! I secured your inheritance! Everything I built, every dollar of the Vance estate that you enjoy today, exists because I had the courage to make a sacrifice!"
"A sacrifice?" I finally spoke up from the hospital bed, my voice trembling with exhaustion and fury. "You didn't make a sacrifice, Diane. You committed fraud. And then you sat at my dinner table for seven years, calling me a low-class opportunist who wasn't good enough for your precious, pure family."
Diane turned her head toward me, her eyes flashing with pure hatred. "Keep your mouth shut, Sarah! You are a nobody! You have no right to speak to me about family integrity!"
"Get out," Ryan said quietly.
Diane blinked, startled. "What?"
"Get out of this room, Mom," Ryan repeated, his voice dropping into a low, deadly quiet tone that sent a chill through the air. "Get out of this hospital. And do not ever come near my wife or my daughter again."
"Ryan... you can't be serious!" Diane pleaded, taking a step toward him. "I am your mother! I raised you! I loved you!"
"You didn't love me," Ryan replied, looking at her with cold, dead eyes. "You loved the leverage I gave you over Dad's money. Get out before I call hospital security to remove you."
Diane looked around the room one last time.
Dr. Matthews stood like an immovable wall beside my bed. The two nurses watched her with undisguised contempt. Ryan turned his back on her, walking over to sit beside me, gently wrapping his arm around my shoulders.
Realizing she had lost completely, Diane straightened her jacket, wiped her face with a silk handkerchief, and sneered at us all.

"You'll regret this, Ryan," she hissed through her teeth. "Without me, you are nothing."
She turned on her high heels and slammed the delivery room door shut behind her.
