Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

For two weeks, the Carranza estate became both Elena’s sanctuary and her training ground.

Under the care of Clara and Dr. Mercer, the physical bruises on Elena’s skin faded into faint yellow shadows, and the deep cut on her cheek healed into a thin, barely visible line. But it was the transformation inside her that was truly remarkable.

Matthew did not hide her away like a delicate flower. Instead, every morning after breakfast, he invited her into his private study. He laid out thick leather folders containing years of financial audits, bank statements, and shell company filings related to Vargas Enterprises.

Elena possessed a sharp, intuitive mind—a gift inherited from her father, who used to teach her accounting principles when she was just a young girl sitting on his office rug. Together with Matthew’s brilliant legal team, Elena spent hours deciphering the tangled web of corruption Isabel had woven over the last five years.

"Look here," Elena pointed with a silver pen, leaning over the massive mahogany desk, her long dark hair falling over her shoulder. She was wearing a tailored ivory blouse and dark trousers that Matthew had commissioned for her. "This subsidiary—Maritime Holdings—it’s registered in the Cayman Islands. Isabel transferred three million dollars from my father's private trust into this account two days before he died."

Matthew stood behind her, leaning down slightly, his arm resting on the edge of the desk. The proximity of his body, the faint scent of his cedarwood cologne, sent a delicate warmth through her veins.

"She used Arthur's money to pay off Ambrose's preliminary silence," Matthew noted, his voice close to her ear, deep and commanding. "Which means Ambrose was blackmailing her even back then. They weren't just business partners, Elena. They were co-conspirators."

"They murdered him, didn't they?" Elena whispered, turning her head to look at him. Her face was inches from his.

Matthew looked down at her lips, then met her fierce brown eyes. "We don't have the hard medical proof yet. But today, we take away their oxygen."

Today was the emergency board meeting of Vargas Enterprises.

Isabel had called the meeting in a desperate attempt to force a vote to sell thirty percent of the company’s remaining voting stock to Richard Ambrose—a final, frantic move to liquidate assets and raise cash before Matthew's financial chokehold destroyed her completely. What Isabel did not know was that Matthew had spent the last fortnight silently acquiring every single outstanding share owned by minority investors who were terrified of the company's impending bankruptcy.

At two o'clock sharp, a sleek black limousine pulled up to the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Vargas Enterprises in the heart of the financial district.

The rear door opened, and Matthew stepped out, looking regal in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit. He turned and extended his hand. Elena stepped out beside him. She looked stunning—a vision of elegance, strength, and aristocratic beauty in a dark emerald silk dress, her hair swept up in an elegant twist, high heels clicking with quiet confidence against the granite pavement. She was no longer the bruised, terrified girl in a torn silver dress running through the mud.

She was Arthur Vargas's daughter, returned to reclaim her kingdom.

They walked through the grand lobby, flanked by Leo and four security officers. Employees paused, whispering in hushed, shocked tones as they recognized the girl who had vanished two weeks ago amid rumors of a scandal. Elena kept her chin high, her arm woven gracefully through Matthew's. The steady warmth of his body beside her was an anchor that kept her ground firmly attached to the floor.

They rode the private elevator up to the 40th floor.

Inside the glass-walled board executive room, the tension was thick enough to choke on.

Isabel Vargas sat at the head of the long oak table, looking visibly worn despite her heavy makeup and expensive diamond jewelry. Dark circles were visible under her eyes, and her hands trembled slightly as she shuffled a stack of papers. Sitting to her right was Richard Ambrose—a stout, silver-haired man in his late fifties with slicked-back hair, a cruel mouth, and small, predatory eyes.

"We don't need to wait any longer," Isabel snapped at the five board members seated around the table. "Matthew Carranza is playing mind games. He bought some bad debt, nothing more! He has no legal standing to attend an internal board vote. We vote on Mr. Ambrose’s acquisition bid now!"

"I wouldn't sign that paper just yet, Isabel," a smooth, dark voice rang out from the doorway.

The double doors swung open.

Isabel’s head snapped up, her face draining of color instantly. Ambrose stood up so fast his heavy leather chair scraped violently against the hardwood floor.

"You..." Isabel gasped, her eyes locking onto Elena standing beside Matthew. "Elena?! What... how dare you show your face here after the disgrace you caused?!"

Elena didn't flinch. She stepped forward, her dark eyes flashing with pure, unyielding disdain. "The only disgrace in this room, Isabel, is sitting at the head of my father's table."

"Security!" Ambrose roared, his face flushing a dangerous shade of red, his thick neck bulging over his collar. "Get these people out of here! This is a private corporate meeting!"

Matthew walked into the room with leisurely grace, unbuttoning his suit jacket and placing his hands casually in his pockets. Leo stepped up behind him, carrying a thick black leather briefcase.

"Security won't be helping you today, Richard," Matthew said mildly. "The building's security detail was replaced by my firm at noon today. As for this meeting... it is indeed a corporate matter. And as the holder of fifty-two percent of the voting shares of Vargas Enterprises, I am exercising my right to chair it."

A collective gasp echoed across the board members.

"Fifty-two percent?!" one elderly director exclaimed, standing up. "That's impossible! Isabel said the majority control was locked in trust!"

"The trust was broken the moment Isabel pledged company assets as collateral against predatory loans," Matthew said coldly. He gestured to Leo, who opened the briefcase and slid thick, blue-bound legal documents across the table to every board member. "You are looking at the legal transfer of equity. I am now the majority owner of this firm."

Isabel slammed her palms onto the table, standing up, her voice screeching in high panic. "This is a fraud! You manipulated the market! You kidnapped my stepdaughter and brainwashed her into handing over her inheritance rights!"

Elena took three deliberate steps toward the table, placing her hands firmly on the back of a chair, staring directly into Isabel's terrified eyes.

"I wasn't kidnapped, Isabel," Elena said, her voice dropping into a low, icy register that sent a shiver through the room. "I escaped. I escaped the room you locked me in. I escaped the monster you tried to sell me to." She turned her sharp gaze onto Richard Ambrose, who flinched, taking a step back. "Did you tell the board about your little arrangement, Richard? How you promised Isabel five million dollars in off-the-books cash if she delivered me to your hotel suite?"

The board members gasped, looking between Ambrose and Isabel with disgust.

"She's lying!" Ambrose yelled, sweat breaking out on his forehead. "She's a hysterical girl making wild accusations! You have no proof!"

"We have the security footage from the hallway outside the master suite, Richard," Matthew interjected softly, taking a seat at the far end of the table, crossing one long leg over the other. "We have the audio recording from the intercom system inside the room. And most importantly, we have the forensic trail of the wire transfer you made to Isabel's Cayman account three hours before the party."

Ambrose’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, his face turning a sickly shade of grey.

"As the majority shareholder," Matthew announced, his voice booming with undeniable authority, "my first official act is to remove Isabel Vargas from her position as CEO, effective immediately. My second act is to cancel all pending negotiations with Ambrose Shipping."

"You can't do this to me!" Isabel screamed, her hands clutching her throat as if she were suffocating. "I spent five years building this company!"

"You spent five years stealing from my father!" Elena countered, stepping around the table until she was standing inches from Isabel. "You stripped his name off his own foundation. You treated his memory like dirt. But it ends today."

Matthew stood up, nodding to two uniformed police officers who stepped into the room from the hallway.

"Isabel Vargas, Richard Ambrose," Matthew said calmly, "the District Attorney’s office has just issued warrants for your arrest on charges of corporate embezzlement, criminal conspiracy, and attempted human trafficking."

Isabel let out a choked scream as the police officers stepped forward, pulling her hands behind her back and snapping cold iron handcuffs around her wrists. "Elena! Tell them! Tell them I raised you! Tell them I was a mother to you!" Isabel wept frantically as she was pulled away. "You ungrateful little bitch! You'll burn in hell for this!"

"My mother died when I was seven," Elena said softly, watching with cold detachment as Isabel was dragged out of the boardroom, her diamond earrings catching the light one last time before the doors shut behind her.

Ambrose was escorted out right behind her, shouting profanities at his lawyers over his shoulder.

The room fell completely silent. The remaining board members sat frozen, stunned into silence by the sheer speed and absolute devastation of the coup.

Elena stood at the head of the table, staring at her father's empty leather chair. The storm that had raged in her heart for years finally began to settle, leaving behind a profound, quiet stillness.

Matthew walked up behind her, placing a warm hand on the small of her back. His touch was comforting, grounding, filled with a deep, silent pride.

"You did well, Elena," he whispered softly.

Elena turned to look at him, her dark eyes shining with emotion. "It's not over yet, is it? The company is still drowning in debt."

Matthew smiled—a genuine, warm smile that transformed his dark, stern face into something breathtakingly handsome.

"Vargas Enterprises is fine," Matthew said softly. "Because as of today, the majority owner is transferring forty percent of her voting shares back to the rightful heir."

Elena gasped. "Matthew... no! That's millions of dollars! You bought those shares with your own money!"

"I told you on the night I found you in the rain," Matthew murmured, stepping closer, his eyes locking onto hers with intense warmth, "I invest in fighters. And I have no intention of letting this partner go."
