Chapter 5 - The Test of Fate

A month passed in a heavy, painful haze.

Elena moved into a charming, light-filled apartment in the quiet historic district of the city. She maintained her position as Chairwoman of Vargas Enterprises, arriving at the office early every day, pouring all her energy into expanding her father's legacy. She was financially independent, safe, and deeply respected.

Yet, her heart felt hollow.

She saw Matthew only during essential board meetings and public industry galas. They maintained a professional distance, treating each other with polite, agonizing courtesy. But every time their eyes met across a crowded conference room, the intense, unspoken longing between them hung in the air like an electric current.

Matthew looked thinner, tired, his dark eyes shadowed by sleepless nights. He no longer smiled. He had thrown himself into his work with a terrifying, relentless intensity, acquiring three major international shipping conglomerates in less than thirty days, as if trying to drown out the silence in his empty home.

Clara visited Elena’s apartment once a week, bringing home-baked pastries and quiet updates.

"He doesn't eat, child," Clara said softly one afternoon, sitting in Elena's sunny kitchen. "He sits in that library every night until dawn, staring at the empty armchair where you used to sit. The house isn't a home anymore, Elena. It’s just a mausoleum again."

Elena squeezed her tea mug tightly, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "He needs to forgive himself, Clara. I forgave him a long time ago for what his family did. But he won't let himself accept my love because he thinks it's tainted by guilt."

"Then show him it isn't," Clara urged gently, placing her warm hand over Elena's. "That boy has lived his whole life taking care of everyone else, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. He doesn't know how to let someone fight for him."

The defining test of their fate came on a rainy Tuesday evening in late November.

Elena was leaving a charity gala at the Grand Opera House, hosted to raise funds for young women fleeing domestic abuse—a cause close to her heart. The rain was coming down in steady, cold sheets, reminding her vividly of the night her life had changed forever.

As her driver pulled up to the curb, a dark sedan suddenly cut through the lane, blocking her car.

Before her security detail could react, three armed men in black leather jackets burst out of the sedan. One of them smashed the driver's window of Elena's car, while another grabbed Elena from behind, pressing a cold, metallic gun barrel against her ribs.

"Don't scream, pretty lady," a rough voice growled in her ear. "Ambrose’s loyalists sent their regards. You destroyed his life; now you're going to pay his legal fees."

Elena’s heart slammed into her throat, but she didn't panic. She was no longer the helpless girl from three months ago. She slammed her high heel down onto the man's foot with all her weight.

"Ah, damn it!" the man yelled, losing his grip for a split second.

Elena slipped out of his grasp, running toward the illuminated steps of the Opera House, screaming for help.

"Get her!" the gunman roared, raising his weapon, pointing it directly at her back.

A loud, deafening gunshot echoed through the rain-slicked street.

Elena flinched, waiting for the burning pain—but it never came.

Instead, a heavy, familiar body collided with hers, wrapping around her like a human shield, throwing her safely behind a marble pillar on the upper steps of the Opera House.

Matthew.

He had been watching her from his own car across the street, as he did every night she attended public events, silently guarding her from afar.

"Matthew!" Elena screamed as they hit the ground together.

Below the steps, Leo and Matthew's armed security team returned fire with ruthless, tactical precision. Within thirty seconds, the three attackers were neutralized, pinned to the ground in handcuffs as police sirens wailed in the distance.

Elena scrambled onto her knees, pulling Matthew into her lap. "Matthew! Oh my God, Matthew, are you hit?!"

Matthew lay in her arms, his face pale, gasping for breath. A deep red stain was spreading rapidly across the shoulder of his charcoal suit jacket where the bullet had grazed him.

"Elena..." Matthew rasped, his voice weak, his hand trembling as he reached up to cup her cheek, his thumb catching her frantic tears. "Are you... are you hurt?"

"I'm fine! I'm completely fine!" she sobbed, pressing her hand over his bleeding shoulder, trying to stop the flow. "You idiot! Why did you jump in front of a bullet?!"

Matthew let out a breathy, painful chuckle, his grey eyes shining with an overwhelming, incandescent warmth that shattered every cold barrier he had ever built around his heart.

"Because... because my life is worthless without you, Elena," Matthew whispered, his voice thick with emotion, his fingers tangling in her wet dark hair. "I don't care about the debt. I don't care about my family's past. I jumped because I love you. I have loved you since the moment you looked at me in the back of my car and refused to give up."

Elena gasped, fresh tears pouring down her cheeks, falling like warm rain onto his pale face.

May you like

"You fool," she cried out, leaning down, pressing her forehead against his, her breath mingling with his. "I don't care about the debt either! I forgave you weeks ago! I love you, Matthew! I love you so much!"

Matthew’s eyes closed in profound relief, a soft, beautiful smile spreading across his lips. "Then take me home, Elena. Please... take me home."
