Chapter 1 - The Blood on Their Hands

The autumn wind whipped through the gated estate, biting into Emily’s skin. But the cold outside was nothing compared to the ice in her chest. She stood frozen on the asphalt, her yellow rubber gloves still clutching the handle of her battered suitcase, as three tiny figures hurled themselves toward her.
Ethan, Noah, and Liam—the five-year-old triplets—were sobbing so hard they could barely breathe. Their small, matching pajamas were ripped at the sleeves, stained with smeared crimson blood that glistened under the streetlights.
"Miss Emily! Miss Emily!"
The boys hit her all at once, throwing their tiny arms around her legs and waist, clinging to her as if they were drowning and she was the only lifeboat in a storm.
"Oh my God! Babies, what happened?!" Emily dropped to her knees right there on the cold pavement, ignoring her suitcase as it tipped over into the gutter. She caught Ethan first, her gloved hands frantically checking his face, his arms, his neck. "Are you hurt? Whose blood is this?!"
"It's not ours! It's—it's hers!" Noah wailed, burying his wet, tear-streaked face into Emily’s navy uniform.
A hundred yards behind them, heavy footfalls thundered against the concrete.
Richard Hawthorne arrived out of breath, his expensive silk shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his dark hair wildly disheveled. The powerful billionaire, a man who commanded boardrooms worth tens of billions, looked utterly destroyed. His eyes were wide, white-rimmed with sheer horror, his hands shaking violently as he reached out toward his sons.
"Ethan! Noah! Liam!" Richard gasped, sinking to his knees beside Emily. "God in heaven... boys, come here! Let me see where you're cut! What did you do?!"
When Richard reached for Liam, the youngest boy shrank back in absolute terror, hiding behind Emily’s back. He buried his tiny fist in the fabric of Emily's dress, cowering from his own father.
"Don't touch us!" Liam shrieked, his voice cracking with trauma. "You let her do it! You helped her!"
Richard flinched as if he had been physically struck. "What? What are you talking about? Liam, baby, it's Daddy—"
"You threw Miss Emily out!" Ethan screamed, stepping in front of Emily, his tiny shoulders squared defensively against the giant of a man who was his father. The blood on Ethan's forearms smeared onto Emily’s clothes as he held his small hands out to shield her. "You threw her out, and then Victoria went into Mommy's locked room!"
Richard froze. The air seemed to leave his lungs in an audible gasp. "What... what did you just say?"
"She went into Mommy's room with a heavy hammer!" Noah sobbed, tears cutting clean tracks through the dust and blood on his cheeks. "She said now that the ugly thief nanny was gone, she was going to smash all of Mommy's glass statues and burn Mommy's paintings so we would forget her forever!"
"She tried to stop us when we screamed!" Ethan added, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and grief. "She grabbed Liam by his hair and shoved him into the broken mirror! We fought her, Daddy! We bit her arms and kicked her until she bled! She bled all over us, and she locked the door from the outside, but we broke the window and climbed out! She told us you sold us to a boarding school!"
The street fell into a suffocating, violent silence.
Richard sat back on his heels, his face turning an ashen, ghost-like gray. The blood on his children wasn't theirs. It was Victoria’s. The boys had fought like wild animals to escape a woman who was actively trying to destroy the only remnants of their deceased mother.
"She... she touched Eleanor's room?" Richard whispered, his voice dangerously hollow.
Eleanor, his late wife, had passed away during childbirth five years ago. Her private sanctuary inside the east wing of the estate had remained locked, untouched, preserved like a holy shrine. No one was ever allowed inside except Emily, whom Richard had trusted implicitly to keep the room dusted and preserved.
Victoria Lane had spent two years pretending to respect that room. She had pretended to love the boys. She had played the compassionate, patient future stepmother while slowly poisoning Richard’s mind against Emily.
"Daddy," Liam whimpered, reaching out with a trembling, blood-stained finger to touch Richard's hand. "Victoria said you hate us. She said you fired Miss Emily because Miss Emily tried to save Mommy's pictures from her. Is that true? Do you hate us?"
A tear broke from Richard’s eye, trailing down his sharp cheekbone. He looked up from his sons and met Emily’s eyes.
Emily wasn't looking at him with anger. She was looking at him with profound, heart-wrenching pity—and a fiercely protective fury for the three boys wrapped in her arms.
"Richard," Emily said softly, her voice steady despite the chaos. "Look at your children. Look at what you allowed into your home because you were too blind to see the truth."
Richard didn't say a word. He slowly stood up. The grief on his face hardened into something dark, lethal, and terrifyingly cold.
"Get in the car," Richard said quietly to the head security guard, who had just pulled up in a sleek black SUV behind them.
May you like
"Sir?" the guard asked, trembling.
"Take Miss Carter and my sons into the SUV. Keep them safe," Richard commanded, his eyes fixed on the distant gates of his mansion. "I am going back inside."
