Chapter 2 - The Mask Shatters

The front double doors of the Hawthorne mansion didn't just open; they shattered against the grand entry walls as Richard kicked them wide.
Inside, the grand foyer was dead quiet, save for the rhythmic, panicked shuffling coming from the east wing stairwell.
Victoria Lane stood near the base of the marble staircase, frantically wiping blood from deep nail scratches on her wrists and forearm using a silk napkin. She was wearing a cream-colored designer dress that was now ruined, torn at the collar, and splotched with red. In her left hand, she held a heavy brass candlestick, and near her feet lay a box filled with scorched canvas frames and shattered crystal.
She turned at the sound of the doors, her eyes wide with frantic desperation. When she saw Richard walking toward her, her expression instantly melted into a tearful, hysterical mask of innocence.
"Richard! Oh, thank God you're back!" Victoria sobbed, dropping the candlestick with a loud clatter and rushing toward him. "It was awful! Those... those little monsters went completely insane the moment you left! They attacked me! I tried to stop them from damaging Eleanor's things, but they lost their minds because that horrible nanny groomed them to hate me!"
Richard didn't stop walking.
He didn't speak.
He simply raised his right hand, caught Victoria by the front of her designer dress, and shoved her backward with such force that she slammed against the grand piano in the center of the foyer. The keys crashed in a discordant, deafening chord.
"Richard!" Victoria shrieked, clutching her chest, her carefully applied makeup ruined by real sweat and panic. "Are you crazy?! What are you doing?!"
"You touched Eleanor’s room," Richard said. His voice wasn't loud. It was a deadly, low vibration that vibrated through the floorboards.
"I—I didn't! The boys are lying!" Victoria stammered, backing away as Richard closed the distance. "You know how unstable they are! They're traumatized children! They made it up because they're obsessed with Emily!"
"My sons came out of that house with your blood on their hands, Victoria," Richard said, stepping over the shattered remains of a hand-blown glass rose—the last gift Eleanor had ever given him before she died. "They broke through a second-story window to get away from you."
Victoria's breath hitched. Her mask began to fracture, peeling away to reveal the cold, calculating woman underneath.
"They are spoiled, unruly brats!" Victoria suddenly snapped, her voice dropping its soft tone and sharpening into an ugly glare. "I tried to civilize them, Richard! I tried to give you a real life! A life without the ghost of your dead wife hanging over every room! A life without a pathetic, low-class servant hovering in our space like she owns the place!"
"A servant?" a gentle voice echoed from the open doorway.
Victoria whipped her head around.
Emily walked into the foyer, flanked by two armed estate security guards. The triplets walked close behind her, their injuries cleaned and bandaged, holding onto Emily’s skirt like a shield.
"I was never just a servant to this family, Victoria," Emily said calmly, her gaze unyielding. "I was the person who held these boys when they screamed from nightmares. I was the person who stayed up with them when they had forty-degree fevers while Richard was working, and while you were out spending his money at auctions."
"Shut up! Shut up, you thief!" Victoria screamed, pointing a manicured, blood-stained finger at Emily. "Richard, call the police! She stole your solid gold Rolex! I found it in her bag myself!"
"Did you?" Richard asked coldly.
He turned to his chief of security, Marcus, who was standing quietly near the entrance holding a digital tablet.
"Marcus," Richard said without taking his eyes off Victoria. "Play the feed."
Victoria froze. "What feed?"
"The internal security grid," Marcus said neutrally, tapping the screen. A high-definition video feed began playing, projecting onto the large smart display above the fireplace.
The camera showed the master dressing room two hours earlier. Victoria was clearly visible, sneaking into Richard's private safe, taking his gold Rolex, and walking directly down to the staff quarters. The video showed her slipping the watch into Emily’s personal luggage while Emily was downstairs preparing lunch for the children.
Victoria’s face drained of every ounce of color. Her knees buckled, and she grabbed the edge of the grand piano to keep from falling.
"You forgot," Richard whispered, stepping right up to her, his shadow completely enveloping her trembling frame. "I built my entire empire on cybersecurity. Every inch of this house—except for my children's bedrooms and Eleanor's sanctuary—is recorded on encrypted servers that only I and Marcus can access."
"Richard... please..." Victoria whimpered, dropping to her knees, clutching at his trousers. "I did it for us! I loved you! She was coming between us! The boys were coming between us! We were supposed to start a new family—our own family!"
"Don't you ever say the word 'family' again," Richard hissed, kicking his leg free from her grasp with utter disgust.
He turned to the security guards.
"Throw her out. Hand her over to the police officers waiting at the front gates. Press charges for grand larceny, child endangerment, breaking and entering, and assault."
"No! Richard! You can't do this to me! My father will ruin you! My family's legal team will—" Victoria screamed as the two massive security guards hoisted her up by her arms and dragged her across the marble floor. Her frantic screams echoed down the long driveway until the heavy front doors slammed shut, cutting her off forever.
Silence descended upon the grand foyer.
The broken glass of Eleanor's rose sparkled under the chandelier. The air was thick with the scent of ozone, fear, and shattered illusions.
Richard turned slowly around. He looked at his three sons, who were still clinging to Emily. Then he looked at Emily—her navy uniform ruined, her yellow gloves still tucked into her pocket, her eyes shining with quiet, unshakeable dignity.

The billionaire tech giant—a man who had never apologized to anyone in his professional life—dropped heavily to his knees in the middle of the ruined foyer.
"Emily..." Richard whispered, his voice cracking entirely as tears overflowed his eyes. "What have I done?"
