Chapter 3 - The Gala at Blackwood Manor

The annual Vale Children’s Foundation Charity Gala was held at Blackwood Manor—a historic sea-cliff estate in Bar Harbor that Adrian had purchased five years ago for high-society events.

Tonight, the grand ballroom was a sea of black-tie tuxedos, diamond necklaces, and glittering champagne flutes. Over four hundred of the world’s most powerful people—senators, foreign ambassadors, tech billionaires, and Hollywood executives—filled the room under three massive crystal chandeliers.

The media wall at the entrance was flashing continuously with hundreds of camera strobes.

Standing at the center of the press carpet, wearing a stunning, backless emerald-green silk gown by Schiaparelli, was Celeste Montclair.

Her hair was the main topic of conversation in every corner of the room.

The left side of her head was cut into an edgy, elegant asymmetrical bob that exposed her long, graceful neck and a magnificent fifty-carat diamond drop earring. The press was in an absolute frenzy, hailing her as "the bravest style icon of the decade"—a woman who had sacrificed her world-famous locks to raise awareness for childhood cancer.

"Miss Montclair! Over here!" a reporter from Vogue shouted, pushing a microphone toward her face. "Is it true you cut your hair yourself in a private moment of reflection?"

Celeste offered a modest, heartbreakingly beautiful smile, her sky-blue eyes glistening with rehearsed emotion.

"It wasn't about style," Celeste said softly, her voice amplified through the press speakers. "When you visit the pediatric oncology wards and see those sweet, innocent angels fighting for their lives... hair seems so insignificant. I wanted to give them something real. Something personal."

The press crowd let out a collective, sympathetic gasp. Cameras flashed furiously.

Standing near the grand staircase at the edge of the ballroom, holding a glass of sparkling water, Adrian Vale watched her performance.

He wore a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo that fitted his broad shoulders perfectly. His face was entirely devoid of emotion, but beneath his quiet exterior, his blood was boiling.

Marcus Vance stepped up beside him, leaning in close to whisper in his ear.

"The ambulance arrived at the Cambridge facility at three in the morning," Marcus reported quietly. "Dr. Aris finished the initial T-cell extraction on Lucia. The little girl is resting comfortably in the ICU suite. Elena is by her side."

"And the genomic report on the hair sample?" Adrian asked, his voice low.

Marcus pulled a small, encrypted tablet from his inner jacket pocket, sliding the screen open for Adrian to see.

"The DNA sequencing confirmed the hair belongs to Celeste Montclair," Marcus whispered. "But the toxicology panel showed something extraordinary, Boss."

Adrian glanced down at the screen. His eyes narrowed.

"Heavy traces of L-744," Marcus read from the screen. "L-744 is a restricted, experimental immunosuppressant drug manufactured exclusively by a Swiss pharmaceutical firm named Helvetia Bio."

"Why would Celeste be taking an experimental Swiss immunosuppressant?" Adrian asked, his sharp mind immediately calculating the variables.

"She wasn't taking it to cure an illness," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a chilling whisper. "L-744 has one very specific, documented side-effect when administered in micro-doses over six months."

Adrian looked at Marcus. "Alopecia. Traumatic hair follicle necrosis."

"Precisely," Marcus nodded. "Celeste didn't cut her hair for charity, Boss. She intentionally poisoned her own hair follicles using a smuggled Swiss drug to induce synthetic hair loss—all so she could trigger the two-million-dollar Lloyd's of London celebrity insurance payout!"

Adrian let out a slow, quiet breath. The terrifying depth of her greed was almost awe-inspiring.

"And who bought the Helvetia Bio stock six months ago?" Adrian asked softly.

Marcus tapped the tablet screen, pulling up a corporate registration document.

"A shell company registered in Geneva," Marcus answered. "Owned jointly by Celeste Montclair... and your Chief Financial Officer, Arthur Vance."

Adrian’s jaw locked.

He looked across the room. Standing near the bar, laughing with a group of offshore bankers, was Arthur Vance—the sixty-two-year-old CFO who had served on Adrian’s executive board for eight years. The man who had called Adrian twenty-four hours ago to "report" the hair discrepancy to throw suspicion onto the Italian wigmaker.

It was a double-blind play, Adrian realized instantly. Arthur Vance called me to make himself look like an innocent whistleblower, while Celeste set up Elena to take the fall if the insurance investigators came asking questions.

"Adrian, darling!"

Celeste’s sweet, melodic voice cut through his thoughts.

She glided across the ballroom floor toward him, her emerald silk dress rustling against the marble, her arm linked through Arthur Vance’s sleeve. She held a microphone in her right hand, her face beaming with radiant, triumphant energy.

"The auction is about to start, Adrian!" Celeste said excitedly, resting her hand on his chest. "The board wants us on stage together for the presentation of the hair donation box!"

Adrian looked down at her face. He looked at her sparkling eyes, her flawless smile, her deceptive, deadly beauty.

"Of course, Celeste," Adrian said, a slow, dark smile creeping onto his lips. "Let's give them a presentation they will never forget."
