Chapter 4 - The Unmasking on the Stage

The grand ballroom lights dimmed.

A massive spotlight illuminated the main stage at the front of the room, where a podium sat draped in navy blue velvet. Behind the podium hung a forty-foot high-definition LED screen displaying the logo of the Vale Children’s Cancer Foundation.

The four hundred wealthy guests filled the gold-backed chairs, their conversations dying down to an expectant murmur.

Adrian stood at the side of the stage, watching as Celeste stepped up to the podium.

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.

Celeste raised her hands gracefully, her face a mask of humble gratitude. She waited for the applause to taper off before leaning into the microphone.

"Thank you," Celeste said, her voice filled with soft, emotional warmth. "Thank you all so much. Tonight, we aren't just raising money for medical research. We are giving hope to families who are facing their darkest hours."

She turned toward the side of the stage, pointing her hand toward a small, glass display case resting on a velvet pedestal. Inside the case lay the velvet pouch containing the fake seventeen-inch champagne-blonde extension.

"When I decided to donate my hair tonight," Celeste continued, pressing a hand to her heart, "I knew I wanted it to represent complete purity. Every strand of hair in this box represents a promise to the little girls in our oncology wards—a promise that they are loved, seen, and remembered."

A few emotional gasps swept through the audience. Two society women in the front row wiped away tears.

"And now," Celeste beamed, "I would like to invite my brilliant fiancé, Adrian Vale, to join me on stage to officially open the bidding for tonight’s primary research grant!"

The crowd clapped enthusiastically.

Adrian stepped into the spotlight. He walked slowly across the stage, his black tuxedo immaculate, his expression calm, strong, and completely unreadable.

He reached the podium, standing beside Celeste. She reached out to take his hand, offering him a sweet, loving smile for the press cameras.

Adrian did not take her hand.

Instead, he stepped up to the main microphone, reached into his jacket pocket, and pulled out a small, remote-control flash drive.

"Thank you, Celeste," Adrian said into the microphone. His voice was deep, clear, and echoed with absolute authority through the massive ballroom speakers. "That was a truly moving speech."

Celeste blinked, her smile faltering slightly at his cold tone. "Adrian?" she whispered off-mic.

"Before we begin the auction tonight," Adrian continued, looking out over the sea of four hundred powerful guests, "I want to share a short video with our donors. A video that illustrates the true nature of the work being done behind the scenes at our foundation."

He clicked the button on the remote control.

The forty-foot high-definition LED screen behind them flickered.

The foundation logo disappeared.

In its place appeared a crystal-clear, high-definition security camera video from the winter garden of Vale Manor, recorded twenty-four hours prior.

The ballroom fell dead silent.

On the screen, Celeste Montclair was sitting in front of the gold-framed vanity mirror. Elena Marquez was standing behind her, holding silver shears, her face pale, her eyes red from crying.

The audio came through the ballroom sound system with terrifying clarity:

“Please, Miss Montclair...” Elena’s recorded voice sobbed on the screen. “My daughter’s blast count is spiking... Dr. Aris said she needs the T-cell therapy this week or she won't survive... Please sign the approval form...”

On the forty-foot screen, Celeste turned around in her chair, her face contorted into a cold, cruel sneer.

“You’ll get the approval form when the insurance check clears, Elena,” Celeste’s recorded voice echoed through the ballroom. “If you say one word to Adrian about the micro-mesh extension, or the Sartori Bottega invoice, I will tell the ethics board that you tried to steal narcotic pain medication from my dressing room. Your daughter will be kicked off the hospital registry before sunset.”

The ballroom erupted into a wave of horrified, deafening gasps!

Guests leaped to their feet in shock! Society women gasped, covering their mouths! Reporters from Vogue and The New York Times whipped out their phones, shooting videos of the massive screen in pure frenzy!

Celeste’s face turned the color of chalk. Her sky-blue eyes went wide with sheer, unadulterated horror. She stumbled backward away from the podium, clutching her throat.

"No... no!" Celeste shrieked, her voice amplified through the open microphone. "That's a fake! That's a deepfake video! Adrian, turn it off! TURN IT OFF!"

Adrian didn't move an inch. His dark gray eyes fixed on her like twin blocks of ice.

He clicked the remote control again.

The screen shifted.

A second document appeared—a certified toxicology report from the Cambridge Genomic Institute, accompanied by a Swiss bank wire statement showing a two-million-dollar insurance claim filed with Lloyd's of London, signed by Celeste Montclair and Arthur Vance.

"For the past six months," Adrian said into the microphone, his voice cutting through the chaos like a broadsword, "my fiancée, Celeste Montclair, and my Chief Financial Officer, Arthur Vance, have been operating a systematic insurance fraud ring."

He stepped toward Celeste, who was trembling violently against the velvet pedestal.

"They used experimental Swiss drugs to intentionally damage her hair follicles," Adrian continued coldly. "They forged foundation acceptance letters, blackmailed a desperate mother whose seven-year-old child was dying of leukemia, and attempted to steal two million dollars from an international insurance firm using my foundation’s name."

In the back of the ballroom, Arthur Vance tried to slip quietly toward the emergency exit doors.

BOOM!

The heavy oak doors were thrown open!

Six armed officers from the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division, accompanied by Marcus Vance and two state troopers, flooded into the ballroom!

"Arthur Vance!" the lead federal agent shouted, drawing his sidearm. "Stay where you are! Do not move!"

Arthur Vance let out a choked shriek as two federal agents tackled him to the floor, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists right in front of two hundred high-society guests!

On stage, Celeste dropped to her knees, weeping hysterically, grabbing the hem of Adrian’s tuxedo trousers.

"Adrian! Please! My love! I did it for us!" Celeste sobbed, her fingernails clutching his fabric. "I wanted to build a empire with you! I was desperate! Arthur threatened me! He made me do it!"

Adrian looked down at her with pure, absolute disgust.

He reached down, caught the edge of her champagne-blonde hairpiece, and gently pulled.

The custom micro-mesh extension tore away from her scalp with a soft rip, exposing her actual, short, patchy, drug-damaged real hair underneath in front of four hundred guests and fifty news cameras.

The camera strobes flashed in a blinding, deafening frenzy!

"You didn't do it for us, Celeste," Adrian said softly, dropping the fake hairpiece onto her lap as she wept on the floor. "You did it for yourself. And you traded a child's life for a piece of gold."

He turned to the federal agents stepping onto the stage.

"Take her out of my house."
