Chapter 4 - The Shield and the HavenThe private family quarters in the east wing were quiet, shrouded in the soft, warm light of amber lamps. Outside the heavy mahogany doors, four heavily armed guards stood at rigid attention, their submachine guns held across their chests.

Lorenzo knocked softly before entering.

The suite was spacious, decorated in warm cream tones, plush velvet sofas, and thick Persian carpets. In the corner of the room, sitting on a plush sofa, was Grace. She was holding a cup of hot chamomile tea, her hands still faintly trembling.

On the large rug in the center of the room, six-year-old Isabella and three-year-old Emma were sitting together. Isabella was carefully showing Emma how to color inside the lines of a fairytale picture book, her previous terror completely forgotten in the simple joy of childhood companionship.

When the door opened and Lorenzo stepped inside, both little girls looked up.

“Daddy!” Isabella squealed, jumping up and running across the room.

Lorenzo dropped to his knees, catching his daughter in a tight, desperate embrace. He closed his eyes, burying his face in her small neck, inhaling the sweet, comforting scent of baby shampoo and strawberry soap. He held her so tightly that Isabella let out a soft, giggling gasp.

“Daddy, you’re squishing me!” she giggled.

“I’m sorry, bellissima,” Lorenzo whispered, pulling back slightly to kiss her forehead, her cheeks, and her tiny nose. “I just missed you so much.”

“Did you win the hide-and-seek game?” she asked innocently.

“We won,” Lorenzo assured her, his eyes shining with unshed tears. “The game is over now. You’re completely safe.”

He stood up, holding Isabella’s hand, and walked over to where Grace was standing nervously. Grace set her teacup down on the side table, bowing her head slightly.

“Mr. Duca,” Grace began softly. “Is... is everything resolved?”

“The threat inside my house has been eliminated,” Lorenzo said, his voice quiet so as not to alarm the children. “The man responsible will never see the light of day again.”

Grace let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, placing a hand over her heart. “Thank God... oh, thank God.”

Lorenzo looked down at little Emma, who was still sitting on the rug, holding a red crayon. He walked over and kneeled beside her once more.

“Emma,” Lorenzo said softly.

The little girl looked up at him with her large, dark brown eyes.

“I promised you that no one would ever hurt you or your mommy again,” Lorenzo said. “And I mean what I say. But I need to ask you one more question, sweet girl. Do you think you can help me one last time?”

Grace took a step forward, a sudden flicker of maternal worry in her eyes. “Mr. Duca?”

“It’s all right, Grace,” Lorenzo reassured her gently before turning back to Emma. “When you were behind the flower cart, Emma... did you see if the man who put the box inside had anything on his hands?”

Emma put her finger to her chin, her small brow furrowing in concentration.

“He had a snake,” Emma said plainly.

Lorenzo froze. “A snake?”

“On his hand,” Emma explained, lifting her own tiny wrist. “A black snake with red eyes. It was drawn on his skin.”

Lorenzo’s breath hitched in his throat.

A black snake with red eyes. That wasn't a corporate proxy code. It wasn't a European equity symbol.

It was the private brand of the Vipera—an elite group of mercenary assassins operating out of Eastern Europe, men who took contracts only from international syndicates. Julian Ross hadn't just used shell accounts; he had hired a professional execution team to infiltrate the estate and secure his exit strategy once the bomb went off.

Lorenzo stood up, his face hardening into marble once more.

He looked at Grace. “Grace, I need you and Emma to stay in this room until morning. My men will bring you food, clothes, and anything else you require. Tomorrow, I am transferring the legal ownership of a private estate in Upstate New York into your name.”

Grace’s mouth fell open in utter shock. “What? Mr. Duca, no... I can’t accept that!”

“You saved my daughter’s life, Grace,” Lorenzo said, his tone leaving no room for argument. “A house, a trust fund for Emma’s education, and lifetime security are the absolute minimum of what I owe you. You are part of the Duca family now. And we take care of our own.”

He looked down at Isabella. “Isabella, stay here with Emma and Grace. Daddy has one last thing to take care of.”

“Will you be back for bedtime stories?” Isabella asked, holding her coloring book.

Lorenzo leaned down and kissed her cheek. “I wouldn't miss it for the world.”
