Chapter 5 - The Night of RetributionBy 2:00 a.m., a heavy, icy rain had begun to fall over New York City.

The industrial harbor district along the Brooklyn waterfront was pitch black, save for the flickering amber lights of towering cranes and the rhythmic crash of dark waves against the rusted steel piers.
Inside Warehouse 14—a massive, cavernous structure used for storing heavy machinery—four men in tactical black gear were frantically packing silver metallic crates into the back of an unmarked black van.
On the right forearm of the lead mercenary was a dark, detailed tattoo of a coiled viper with crimson eyes.
“Hurry up!” the lead mercenary barked in a heavy Eastern European accent, checking his tactical watch. “Ross was supposed to meet us at the docks two hours ago. The dead-man signal hasn't triggered, which means he was taken alive.”
“What about the payment?” another gunman asked, securing a lock on a weapons crate.
“Forget the payment!” the leader snarled, pulling a modified submachine gun over his shoulder. “If Duca’s men extract Ross’s encryption keys, this whole city will be locked down in thirty minutes! We get on the speedboat now and—”
The massive corrugated steel doors of the warehouse suddenly collapsed inward with a deafening CRASH!
A heavy armored SUV slammed through the steel barriers, its high-beam headlights blinding the mercenaries as glass and metal shrapnel rained down across the concrete floor.
Before the mercenaries could raise their weapons, six tactical flashbang grenades arced through the shattered doorway, exploding in brilliant, blinding flashes of white light and thunderous sound.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The mercenaries screamed, dropping their weapons to cover their eyes and ears.
Through the thick white smoke walked Lorenzo Duca.
He didn't wear tactical gear. He wore his tailored black evening trousers, a dark trench coat draped over his broad shoulders, and held an unlit cigar between his teeth. Behind him marched Marco, Mateo, and thirty heavily armed Duca operatives, their rifles trained on the disoriented men.
Within ten seconds, all four mercenaries were forced onto their knees, their hands zip-tied tightly behind their backs.
Lorenzo walked slowly through the drifting smoke, his leather boots clicking sharply against the wet concrete. He stopped directly in front of the leader with the viper tattoo.
Lorenzo reached out with the toe of his boot and kicked the man’s tactical rifle away, sending it sliding across the floor.
“The Vipera,” Lorenzo said smoothly, blowing a thin stream of cool air from his lips. “I heard your group charged ten million euros per contract. I suppose Julian Ross offered you fifteen.”
The mercenary leader spat a mouthful of blood onto the concrete, glaring up at Lorenzo with murderous eyes. “Shoot me, mobster. You get nothing from me.”
Lorenzo chuckled—a deep, dark sound that sent a cold spike of fear straight down the mercenary’s spine.
“Shoot you?” Lorenzo asked softly, bending down until his face was inches from the man’s. “Why would I shoot you? That would be far too quick. You came into my home. You put a bomb in front of a six-year-old child.”
Lorenzo gestured toward Marco.
Marco stepped forward, carrying a metallic briefcase. He opened it on the hood of the van, revealing a high-resolution tablet displaying real-time satellite footage of a quiet villa in a seaside town near Varna, Bulgaria.
The mercenary leader’s eyes widened in sudden, sheer panic.
“That’s your family home, isn't it, Nikolai?” Lorenzo whispered near his ear. “Your wife, Elena. Your two sons, Stefan and Viktor. They’re sleeping right now. Quite peaceful, isn't it?”
“You monster!” Nikolai roared, straining violently against his zip-ties. “Leave them out of this! They know nothing!”
“Exactly,” Lorenzo said, his hazel eyes completely devoid of mercy. “Just as my daughter knew nothing about your corporate contract. You taught me tonight that children are valid targets in a war, Nikolai. Did you think the rules only applied to my family?”
Nikolai began to weep, his arrogant toughness completely collapsing under the weight of genuine, existential terror. “Please! Please, Duca! I’ll tell you everything! I’ll give you the accounts! I’ll give you the names of the politicians who authorized the clearance codes!”
Lorenzo stood up smoothly, closing his trench coat against the damp draft of the rain.

“Give the information to Marco,” Lorenzo commanded coldly as he turned his back on the kneeling men. “If every word is verified by sunrise, his family remains untouched. If a single detail is false... erase them.”
Lorenzo walked out of the warehouse into the pouring rain, leaving behind the sobbing confessions of the men who had dared to touch his world.
