Chapter 4 - The Poison in the GlassThe lockdown at the Russo estate created an atmosphere of heavy, suffocating paranoia. Every servant was interrogated, every security guard’s background was re-examined, and every phone call entering or leaving the property was recorded.

Rachel stayed almost exclusively in the nursery, leaving only to grab meals from the grand kitchen on the main floor.

On Thursday afternoon, while Leo was taking a nap in his crib, Rachel walked down to the kitchen to prepare a bottle of specialized formula.

The grand kitchen was quiet. Chef Antoine had stepped out to inspect the pantry shipments, leaving only the young kitchen assistant, Julian, sweeping the polished tile floors.

"Good afternoon, Miss Rachel," Julian said politely, bowing his head slightly. Julian was a quiet young man in his early twenties, hired six months ago to assist with estate maintenance.

"Afternoon, Julian," Rachel smiled, walking over to the marble island. "Have you seen the fresh batch of sterile water?"

"It's right here on the counter, ma'am," Julian said quickly, pointing to a glass pitcher beside the stove. "Chef Antoine prepared it ten minutes ago."

"Thank you."

Rachel grabbed the bottle, measured out four scoops of nutrient powder, and poured the warm water from the pitcher into the bottle. She sealed it, shook it thoroughly, and set it on a warming tray.

As she turned to pick up a clean dishcloth, her nurse's instinct kicked in.

Something smelled wrong.

It was faint—almost imperceptible under the sweet scent of the vanilla-flavored milk powder. But years of working in emergency medicine had trained Rachel’s nose to recognize chemical anomalies.

It smelled faintly of bitter almonds.

Rachel froze.

Potassium cyanide.

Her heart slammed into her throat. She slowly reached down, picked up the baby bottle, and brought it close to her nose. The faint, bitter scent was definitely coming from inside the bottle.

If a premature baby ingested even a drop of cyanide, his heart would stop within thirty seconds.

Rachel turned around slowly. Julian was still sweeping the floor, but his eyes were darting nervously toward her hands, his knuckles white on the broom handle.

"Julian," Rachel said, keeping her voice light and steady. "Did anyone else come into the kitchen while Chef Antoine was in the pantry?"

Julian stopped sweeping. "No, ma'am. Just me."

"Are you sure?" Rachel took a small step back toward the kitchen doorway, holding the bottle tightly against her side. "Because this water smells strange."

Julian’s expression changed instantly. The polite, humble assistant vanished, replaced by a cold, twitching sneer. He dropped the broom, his hand reaching into his apron pocket to pull out a small, heavy silver revolver.

"You shouldn't have smelled it, nurse," Julian spat, pointing the gun directly at her chest. "It was supposed to look like sudden infant death syndrome. Nice and quiet."

Rachel backed up until her spine hit the edge of the marble island. "Why? Why would you hurt a baby?"

"Because Victor Falcone paid me a million dollars to finish what we started on Lake Shore Drive!" Julian hissed, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Camille died, but that little bastard lived! Falcone wants the Russo bloodline erased!"

"You leak the dock information too," Rachel realized, her mind racing desperately. "You were the mole inside the house."

"Smart girl," Julian sneered. "Now keep quiet and put the bottle down, or I put a bullet through your heart right here."

Rachel looked at the bottle in her hand, then up at Julian’s twitching face.

She didn't freeze. She didn't scream.

With all the strength in her body, Rachel flung the bottle of warm milk straight into Julian’s face.

The heavy glass smashed against his forehead, spraying warm milk and chemical water into his eyes. Julian screamed in pain, temporarily blinded, his gun discharging with a deafening BANG into the marble ceiling.

Rachel sprinted out of the kitchen into the grand hallway, screaming at the top of her lungs: "DANIEL! SECURITY!"

Julian stumbled out of the kitchen, wiping the stinging milk from his eyes, his revolver raised as he pursued her down the corridor toward the grand staircase.

"Get back here, you bitch!" Julian shrieked.

Rachel scrambled up the carpeted stairs, but her foot caught on the edge of her skirt. She stumbled, falling hard onto her hands and knees on the landing.

Julian caught up, grabbing her by her hair and pulling her head back, pressing the cold steel barrel of the revolver directly against her temple.

"End of the line, nurse," Julian growled.

"Step away from her," a voice echoed from the top of the stairs—a voice so cold, so dark, so heavy with murderous rage that the temperature in the grand hall seemed to plunge to absolute zero.

Julian looked up.

Daniel stood at the top of the landing. He wasn't holding a gun. He didn't need one. His eyes were burning with a terrifying, demonic fire. Behind him stood Mateo and six armed security guards, their rifles aimed directly at Julian’s head.

"Drop the gun, Julian," Daniel said quietly, taking a slow, deliberate step down the stairs. "Or I will skin you alive in front of this entire house."

Julian panicked, his hand shaking violently against Rachel’s head. "Stay back! Stay back or I kill her! Falcone has five more men outside! You're all dead anyway!"

Daniel didn't stop walking. "You poisoned my son's food. You helped kill my wife. And now you have your hands on the woman I love."

The woman I love.

The words echoed in Rachel’s mind, cutting through the terror gripping her chest.

Before Julian could react to Daniel’s advance, Mateo fired a single, silenced shot from behind Daniel.

The bullet struck Julian’s right shoulder. Julian screamed, dropping the revolver as he tumbled backward down the marble staircase, crashing onto the hard floor below.

Security guards swarmed Julian instantly, pinning him to the ground and disarming him.

Daniel ignored the traitor completely. He sprinted down the remaining steps, dropping to his knees beside Rachel, pulling her trembling body into his arms and holding her so tightly she could barely breathe.

"Rachel! Are you hurt? Did he touch you?" Daniel stammered, his voice cracking with emotion as he checked her face, her head, her hands.

"I'm okay... I'm okay," Rachel sobbed, burying her face into the crook of his neck. "Leo... the bottle... he poisoned the milk..."

"I know, baby. I know," Daniel whispered, kissing her hair, her forehead, her cheeks over and over again. "It's over. You saved Leo again. You saved us."
