Chapter 5 - The War for ChicagoWith the mole exposed and captured, the full scope of Victor Falcone’s treason against the Russo family came to light. Under Mateo’s heavy interrogation in the estate basement, Julian confessed everything: Falcone was planning a final, desperate assault on the Russo estate that very night, using a team of forty mercenary soldiers equipped with military-grade explosives.

Falcone knew that once Daniel processed the evidence from Julian, the Russo organization would wipe the Falcone family off the map. It was an all-out war for survival.

By eight o’clock that evening, the sky over Lake Forest turned pitch black, heavy storm clouds rolling in from the lake, bringing thunder and driving rain.

Inside the estate, Daniel gathered his top captains in the grand study.

"They will attack from the South Woods," Daniel announced, pointing to a tactical map spread across his mahogany desk. "They think we're unprepared because of the breach today. We let them breach the outer gate, draw them into the central courtyard, and cut off their exit routes."

Mateo nodded. "The Russians and the Irish allies are in position along the perimeter road. Once Falcone’s men step onto the property, nobody leaves alive."

Daniel stood up, pulling a heavy tactical vest over his dark shirt and checking his sidearm.

He turned to Mateo. "Take Rachel and Leo to the subterranean vault beneath the West Wing. It's reinforced with six inches of blast steel. Put four men on the door. If anything happens to me, you escort them out through the secret tunnel to the harbor."

"Boss—" Mateo started.

"That's an order, Mateo," Daniel said firmly.

Ten minutes later, Daniel walked down to the West Wing nursery.

Rachel was sitting on the sofa, holding a sleeping Leo wrapped tightly in a soft blue blanket. She looked up as Daniel entered, her eyes wide with worry as she saw his tactical gear and armed posture.

"You're going out there?" Rachel asked, her voice trembling.

Daniel walked over, kneeling in front of her. He took her soft hand in his large, scarred palm.

"I have to end this, Rachel," Daniel said softly. "As long as Falcone breathes, neither you nor Leo will ever be truly safe. I have to destroy the monsters so my family can live in the light."

"Please be careful," Rachel whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "Don't leave us, Daniel. Leo needs his father. And... and I need you."

Daniel reached up, gently sliding his hand into her hair, pulling her down into a deep, fierce, possessive kiss. Rachel kissed him back with everything she had, tasting the rain and salt on his lips, holding onto him as if she could keep him anchored to the world.

When he finally pulled back, his grey eyes were burning with a soft, beautiful warmth.

"I will come back to you, Rachel," Daniel promised against her lips. "I give you my word."

He stood up, turned, and strode out of the room.

Mateo escorted Rachel and Leo down three flights of hidden stairs into the subterranean vault. The heavy steel door clicked shut, sealing them inside the quiet, climate-controlled bunker.

Outside, the storm broke into violence.

At 9:15 PM, a series of deafening explosions shook the estate as Falcone’s mercenaries blew through the outer stone perimeter. Blacked-out trucks smashed through the front gates, pouring armed soldiers into the central courtyard.

"FIRE!" Mateo’s voice echoed over the tactical radios.

The quiet estate transformed into a battleground. Automatic gunfire rained down from the upper balconies as Russo’s men ambushed Falcone’s force. Tracers lit up the dark, rainy night like demonic fireworks.

Daniel moved through the courtyard like a phantom of death. Armed with a tactical rifle, he moved with lethal, terrifying precision, cutting down Falcone’s mercenaries one by one.

In the center of the courtyard, Victor Falcone himself ducked behind a bronze fountain, clutching a heavy submachine gun, his face contorted in frantic rage as his men fell around him.

"MORETTI! RUSSO!" Falcone screamed into the rain. "YOU CAN'T KILL ME! CHICAGO IS MINES!"

Daniel stepped out from behind a stone pillar, stepping calmly through the crossfire, his rifle raised.

"Chicago was never yours, Victor," Daniel’s voice boomed over the thunder.

Falcone whipped around, raising his gun to fire.

Daniel pulled the trigger three times.

The bullets struck Falcone in the chest, knocking the old crime boss backward into the fountain basin. The water turned crimson under the pouring rain.

Silence fell over the courtyard.

The remaining Falcone mercenaries dropped their weapons, throwing their hands up in absolute surrender as Russo’s allied forces swarmed the perimeter.

The war was over.

Daniel lowered his rifle, standing in the cold rain, wiping blood and rainwater from his forehead. He turned toward the West Wing, his heart hammering against his ribs—not from the battle, but from the desperate need to get back to the woman and child waiting for him beneath the earth.
