Chapter 3 - An Unexpected AllianceElena Reyes sat in the small, sterile break room of the Grand Ashford, staring at her unformatted termination notice resting on the plastic table. Even though Ethan Ashford had intervened the previous night, Ms. Grant, the event director, had made it clear that her presence was no longer welcome. The hotel’s PR department had deemed her a liability.

The door clicked open, not with the sharp rap of a manager, but with the quiet authority of Marcus Vance.
“Miss Reyes,” Marcus said, stepping inside. “Mr. Ashford has sent a car. He requests your presence at his private residence.”
Elena looked up, her eyes flashing with a mix of exhaustion and defiance. “Tell Mr. Ashford that I’m done being a pawn in whatever high-society game he and his fiancée are playing. I lost my job because I caught a falling tray and stopped a boot from hitting my knee. I don't need his charity, and I certainly don't want to be dragged into whatever corporate war he’s fighting.”
“This isn't charity, Miss Reyes,” a smooth voice echoed from the doorway.
Ethan Ashford stepped into the cramped break room, ducking his head slightly to clear the low frame. He wore a simple dark wool coat over a charcoal sweater, looking far more approachable than he had under the chandeliers, yet carrying an undeniable aura of command.
Elena stood up slowly, crossing her arms defensively. “Mr. Ashford. Shouldn't you be dealing with Miss Vale? I heard her father threatened to pull out of the multi-billion-dollar merger unless you publicly groveled.”
A faint, bitter smile touched Ethan’s lips. “Arthur Vale can pull whatever he likes. My engagement was built on convenience and corporate alignment, not loyalty. But my debt to your father is a matter of honor.”
“Honor?” Elena scoffed softly, the bitterness of six struggling years bubbling to the surface. “Where was your honor when the newspapers called my father a reckless watchman who caused a multi-million-dollar fire? Where was your honor when my mother had to sell her wedding ring to pay for my brother’s asthma treatments while your name was plastered across every financial magazine in the country?”
Ethan flinched. The words hit him harder than any physical blow could have. He didn't defend himself; he absorbed the anger, recognizing every ounce of it as justified.
“You’re right,” Ethan said quietly, stepping closer without threatening her space. “I failed him, and I failed your family. But if you walk out of this hotel right now and pretend yesterday never happened, the people who murdered your father—and staged it as an accident—will continue to win. I have the physical file, Elena. But I need your father’s daughter to help me unlock the financial codes hidden inside it.”

Elena stared at him, her breath hitching in her throat. She looked at his intense, unyielding green eyes and saw a reflection of her own fierce determination.
“What do you need me to do?” she asked.
