Chapter 4 - The Vault of SecretsThe subterranean archive beneath Ashford Tower was a relic of cold war engineering—thick concrete walls, biometric scanners, and air filtration systems completely isolated from the corporate network upstairs.

Elena placed her palm against the glass scanner, following Ethan’s instructions. The door hissed open, revealing rows of steel filing cabinets and a central stainless-steel table illuminated by a single overhead lamp.
“Your father was the chief security auditor for Vanguard when they discovered a massive embezzlement scheme run by Arthur Vale and several high-ranking board members,” Ethan explained, laying the singed manila folder on the table. “They were siphoning government infrastructure subsidies into offshore accounts.”
Elena carefully opened the charred folder. Inside lay her father’s handwritten journals, filled with columns of figures, dates, and account numbers. Her fingers traced the familiar, neat handwriting. Her father had been a meticulous accountant before a corporate buyout forced him into lower-paying security work just to keep food on the table.
“These numbers aren't random,” Elena whispered, her analytical mind immediately kicking into gear. “Look at the intervals. They correspond to the quarterly shipping manifests of Vale Freight.”
“Arthur Vale used Vanguard as a front to wash dirty capital,” Ethan said, leaning over the table beside her. “When your father threatened to take the audit straight to federal regulators, they set the fire to destroy the physical evidence and silence him permanently. But Gabriel anticipated them. He hid a master encrypted microchip inside his personal toolbox—the same toolbox that was supposedly destroyed in the fire.”
Elena looked up sharply. “Except my mother kept his toolbox in our basement. She thought it was just full of rusted wrenches and old screwdrivers.”
Ethan’s eyes widened. “Is it still there?”
“My brother and I moved boxes out of the old house last month before the bank foreclosed,” Elena said, her pulse quickening. “It’s sitting in our tiny apartment on the south side right now.”
Before Ethan could reply, the security terminal near the archive entrance flashed a brilliant, pulsing red.
WARNING: EXTERNAL BREACH DETECTED. BIOMETRIC OVERRIDE ACTIVATED FROM UPPER LEVEL.
Marcus’s voice crackled through the secure intercom speaker, frantic and breathless. “Boss! We’ve got a problem. Arthur Vale just walked into the lobby with three armed private security guards and a court order signed by Judge Miller. They’re claiming unauthorized access to classified corporate holdings!”

Ethan’s face hardened into stone. “How did they know we were down here?”
“Someone inside the executive suite leaked our telemetry,” Marcus replied. “And Madison is with them.”
