Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Doubt and Institutional Pressure

By the fourth day, the miracle in Suite 402 had leaked beyond the confidential walls of the pediatric ward.

Hospital administrators, legal counsel, and public relations handlers swarmed the executive floors. While Dr. Salgado and his medical team wanted to study Nico’s recovery scientifically, the corporate side of the hospital saw a massive liability nightmare. A stray, undocumented child wandering into a high-security private wing, administering an unverified substance to a billionaire’s son, and triggering an inexplicable medical recovery was a headline waiting to destroy the hospital’s pristine reputation.

By Thursday morning, child protective services and local law enforcement had also become involved, tracking down the origins of the little girl known as Lupita.

Rodrigo stood in a glass-walled conference room down the hall from Nico’s suite, facing three hospital executives and a stern-faced case worker from the Florida Department of Children and Families.

"Mr. Herrera, we understand your gratitude," the case worker, a sharp-eyed woman named Ms. Vance, said smoothly. "However, the child, Lupita Morales, is a ward of an informal community shelter operating out of an abandoned warehouse near the railway yards. She has no legal guardian of record, no vaccination history, and was found wandering unsupervised. Our protocol requires her immediate placement into state custody pending a full background investigation."

Rodrigo slammed his hand onto the mahogany conference table. The sound made the executives flinch.

"She is not going into state custody," Rodrigo said, his voice dropping into an icy, dangerous register. "Not from a facility bearing my family’s name as its primary endowment donor."

"Mr. Herrera, legally—"

"Legally," Rodrigo interrupted, leaning forward, "I am retaining full custody and guardianship rights of Lupita Morales effective immediately, backed by the full legal resources of Herrera Enterprises. Furthermore, if any representative of this hospital or the state attempts to remove her from this building while my son is still recovering, I will strip every single grant, subsidy, and funding line this hospital receives before the sun sets."

The room went dead silent. The hospital executives exchanged pale, panicked glances. They knew Rodrigo Herrera was a man of his word—and that his family’s foundation kept the entire north wing afloat.

"We… we simply want to ensure proper protocol is followed, Mr. Herrera," the chief administrator stammered. "Naturally, an exception can be made for temporary private oversight under your auspices."

"Damn right it can," Rodrigo said coldly, turning on his heel and walking out of the conference room.

When he returned to Suite 402, he found Andrea sitting on the edge of Nico’s bed, reading him a storybook while the boy giggled, color fully restored to his cheeks. Lupita was sitting cross-legged on the floor, coloring with a box of crayons Rodrigo had had his assistant rush to buy.

Andrea looked up as Rodrigo walked in. The defensive stiffness that had defined her demeanor since arriving from Dallas was gone, replaced by a quiet, haunted humility.

"Ms. Vance from child services called my cell phone," Andrea said softly, closing the storybook. "She said you threatened to defund the hospital if they touched Lupita."

"I did," Rodrigo said, walking over and resting a hand on his wife’s shoulder.

Andrea looked down at Lupita, who was carefully coloring a blue dinosaur with a bright red crayon. Then, Andrea stood up, walked over to the little girl, and knelt beside her.

"Lupita," Andrea said, her voice trembling slightly. "Can you tell me… why did you come here? Out of all the rooms in this big hospital… how did you know where to find Nico?"

Lupita stopped coloring. She looked up at Andrea with those big, solemn eyes.

"The lady in the blue shawl told me," Lupita whispered. "She said the little boy with the dark hair was crying in his sleep, and his mom and dad were too sad to hear him. She said she couldn't come inside the clean building herself because her shoes were dirty, so she gave me the bottle and told me to run fast."

Andrea’s eyes welled with tears. She reached out and gently touched Lupita’s messy black ponytail, smoothing it back.

"Thank you," Andrea choked out, pulling the little girl into a tender, fierce embrace. "Thank you for running fast."
