Chapter 5 - The Turning Point in the Dead of Night

The fifth day—the very day Dr. Salgado had originally marked as Nico’s final expiration timeline—arrived under a heavy, torrential tropical downpour. Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the private suite, blurring the Miami skyline into gray watercolor strokes.
Inside the room, however, there was warmth and light.
Nico was fast asleep in his bed, breathing deeply, evenly, and without the terrifying rattle that had haunted his parents for months. Dr. Salgado had officially signed off on an accelerated discharge plan; barring any unforeseen regressions, Nico would be going home by the weekend.
Rodrigo and Andrea had set up a makeshift camp in the adjoining sitting area. Lupita was curled up on the small sofa, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket Rodrigo had brought from home, sleeping soundly.
Around 2:00 AM, the hospital grew deathly quiet, save for the hum of the air conditioning and the patter of rain against the glass.
Rodrigo woke up from a light doze, feeling a strange, inexplicable chill sweep through the room. He sat up, rubbing his eyes, and looked toward the windows.
The rain outside had stopped instantly—not tapered off, but ceased with unnatural abruptness.
Through the clear glass, against the dark backdrop of the midnight sky, a soft, ethereal luminescence seemed to hover over the hospital gardens below. It wasn't lightning, nor was it the neon glow of the city streets. It was a gentle, sapphire-blue shimmer, radiant and warm, casting dancing reflections across the white ceiling of Suite 402.
Rodrigo stood up quietly, careful not to wake Andrea or Lupita, and walked over to the window.
He pressed his hands against the cool glass and looked down toward the manicured courtyard gardens near the entrance.
Standing beneath the sprawling branches of a banyan tree, illuminated by that soft blue light, was a tall, slender figure draped in a deep blue shawl. Her face was turned upward toward the fourth-floor window, looking directly at him. Even across the distance, Rodrigo could feel an overwhelming wave of profound peace wash over his soul—a sensation of absolute forgiveness, healing, and unconditional love that bypassed logic and pierced straight to his core.
He blinked, rubbing his eyes, and when he looked down again, the figure was gone. The blue light faded into the misty night air, leaving only the ordinary glow of the courtyard lampposts.
At that exact moment, behind him, a small voice spoke.
"She’s going home now," Lupita murmured from the sofa, sitting up and rubbing her eyes.
Rodrigo turned slowly, walking back toward the little girl. "Did you see her, Lupita?"
Lupita nodded sleepily. "She said her job here is finished. The little boy is safe."
Rodrigo knelt beside the sofa, his heart full to bursting. He reached out and gently took Lupita’s hand. "And what about you, Lupita? Are you ready to find a real home?"
May you like
Lupita looked up at him, a bright, gap-toothed smile finally breaking across her face. "Can I stay with the dinosaur boy?"
Rodrigo laughed—a deep, joyful laugh that had been missing from his life for years. "You can stay with us for as long as you want, sweetheart. You’re part of the family now."
