Chapter 3 - The Threat at the Gates

The next morning, the storm had passed, leaving the Greenwich air crisp and cold. But the atmosphere inside the Wainwright estate was thick with anticipation.

Carter stood in the kitchen, watching Claire pack a healthy lunch for Sophie. He had asked her to arrive early, not to clean, but to help him navigate the day. He had realized he didn't know his daughter's favorite foods, or which stuffed animal she needed to sleep. He was a stranger in his own home, and Claire was the only bridge he had left.

"This ticket," Carter said, placing the photocopy of the JFK receipt on the marble counter. "It proves she planned the abandonment. She didn't leave because of an argument. She planned to run away with Caldwell weeks in advance."

Claire looked at the paper, her eyes narrowing. "Richard Caldwell? The tech billionaire? The one who was just indicted last month for corporate espionage?"

"The very same," Carter said, his voice grim. "He was my chief rival. The merger that collapsed yesterday in Manhattan? It was collapsed by a bank that Caldwell’s family controls. Celeste isn't just coming for Sophie. She’s working with Caldwell to destroy me. They want to use Sophie’s custody as leverage to force me to surrender my shares in Wainwright Enterprises."

"That's monstrous," Claire said, her hand dropping onto the counter. "Sophie is a child. She isn't a bargaining chip."

"To people like Celeste and Caldwell, everything is a bargaining chip," Carter said. He looked at Claire, his eyes desperate. "Claire... I need your help. The legal battle is going to be brutal. They are going to paint me as an absentee, cold-hearted father who leaves his child with the domestic staff. And the truth is... they aren't entirely wrong."

"You are not a bad man, Carter," Claire said, using his first name for the first time. "You were just lost in the machine. But you’re waking up."

"I need you to stay," Carter said. "Not as a cleaning woman. I want to hire you as Sophie’s private music instructor and companion. I’ll pay you triple what the agency does. I need someone in this house who Sophie trusts, someone who can keep her safe while I fight this in the courtroom."

Claire hesitated, her thoughts flying to her own daughter, Chloe. "Mr. Wainwright... Carter... my daughter Chloe needs me too. I can't live here."

"Then bring her here," Carter said instantly. "Let Chloe live here with you. This house has ten empty bedrooms. Sophie needs a friend, and you need your daughter. Let’s make this a home for both of them."

Before Claire could answer, the roar of a powerful engine echoed from the driveway.

Carter walked to the window. A sleek, red sports car had parked right in front of the grand entrance. The door swung open, and Celeste Wainwright stepped out, wearing a white trench coat, oversized sunglasses, and a smile that looked like a blade.

Beside her, a tall, slick-looking man in a bespoke suit stepped out of the passenger side. It was Arthur Pendelton, the most ruthless family law attorney in the state of New York.

"She’s here," Carter said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "Claire, take Sophie to the playroom. Don't let her see them."
