Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Gallery

The legal battle did not take months. It took exactly forty-eight hours.

Faced with the evidence of the pre-planned flight, the credit card fraud, and her association with the indicted Richard Caldwell, Celeste’s case dissolved like paper in the rain. Arthur Pendelton withdrew as her counsel before the weekend was over, leaving her to face the federal investigators alone.

On Monday afternoon, the Greenwich estate was once again quiet, but it was a different kind of quiet. It was the peaceful silence of a storm that had finally passed.

Carter stood in the grand gallery of his house, which had been converted into a temporary music room. A beautiful grand piano sat in the center of the room, surrounded by Sophie’s drawings.

The double doors opened, and Claire walked in, leading a shy, dark-haired girl by the hand. It was Chloe.

Sophie, who was sitting on the piano bench, immediately let out a squeal of joy. She jumped down, running toward Chloe with her stuffed rabbit.

"Hi! I’m Sophie," she said, thrusting the rabbit toward Chloe. "This is Barnaby. He likes music too."

Chloe smiled, her shy expression disappearing as she took the rabbit. "I’m Chloe. My mom says you sing like a brave little bird."

"I do!" Sophie said, grabbing Chloe’s hand. "Come look at my drawings!"

As the two girls ran off toward the corner of the room, laughing and talking, Carter walked over to Claire. He looked at her, his expression filled with a gratitude he didn't know how to put into words.

"We did it," Carter said quietly. "Celeste signed the permanent surrender of her parental rights this morning. She’s facing trial for the embezzlement charges. She’s never coming back."

"I’m glad, Carter," Claire said, her eyes soft. "For Sophie’s sake. She deserves to grow up knowing she is safe."

"And what about you?" Carter asked, taking a step closer. "Are you safe here, Claire?"

Claire looked down at her hands, which were no longer red from cleaning chemicals. "I... I don't know what my place is here, Carter. I’m just the music teacher."

"You are not just the music teacher," Carter said, his voice thick with emotion. He reached out, his hand gently covering hers. "You saved my daughter. You saved me. You showed me what a home actually looks like."

May you like

"I just played a few chords," Claire whispered, her breath catching as his fingers tightened around hers.

"No," Carter said. "You brought the music back."
