Chapter 3 - A Promise in the DarkThe private hospice facility in Brooklyn was quiet, wrapped in the soft glow of late afternoon sun filter through sheer curtains. The scent of antiseptic was heavy, but in room 214, fresh yellow roses filled the air.

Alex stood at the doorway, his hand resting gently on Noah and Lucas’s shoulders. On the bed lay Clara Vance.

She was thin, pale, and fragile, a shadow of the vibrant woman who used to paint canvases in his apartment while singing along to old jazz records. But when her eyes opened and landed on Alex, her pale face lit up with a faint, breathy smile.

"You brought them," she whispered, her voice barely louder than a breeze.

"Mama!" the boys cried, running to the side of her bed. They were careful not to touch the tubes connected to her arm, resting their heads softly against her blanketed legs.

Clara stroked their dark hair with weak fingers. "Did you find him? Did you find your Daddy?"

"We found him, Mama!" Noah said proudly. "He lives in the giant tower just like you said!"

Alex walked slowly to the other side of the bed. He sat on the small plastic chair, reached out, and took Clara’s cold hand in his. Tears finally broke free, running silently down his face.

"Clara... why didn't you come to me?" Alex asked, his voice cracking. "All these years... why didn't you tell me?"

"Your father... your family's lawyers... they made it clear that I didn't belong in your world," Clara whispered, looking up at him with dark, tired eyes. "And then after the crash... when news came out that you were severely injured... I thought bringing two babies into your recovery would break you. I wanted to protect them. I wanted to protect you."

"I was broken because I lost you," Alex confessed, squeezing her hand softly. "And I've spent three years living like a ghost because I thought I had nothing left to live for."

Clara smiled faintly, a single tear rolling down her cheek. "You have them now, Alex. Look at them. They have your chin. They have your quiet strength. They have your eyes."

"I won't let anyone take them, Clara. I swear it to you," Alex declared fiercely. "My uncle Richard is already trying to spin this as a corporate threat. But I will fight the board, the press, and the entire world to keep our boys safe."

Clara’s expression suddenly turned grave. She pulled Alex closer with surprising strength.

"It's not just Richard you have to worry about, Alex," she breathed urgently. "My father... Julian Vance... he knows."

Alex frowned. "Julian Vance knows about the boys?"

"He found out two weeks ago when I entered hospice," Clara whispered, her breath coming faster. "He... he never forgave me for leaving the family business to be an artist. But now that he knows he has twin grandsons... he wants them. He wants to use them as leverage against you in the corporate takeover. He told me he would file for emergency custody the moment I pass away, claiming you are an unfit father due to your medical history!"

Alex’s blood ran cold. Julian Vance was a ruthless defense contractor turned tech mogul, a man known for tearing down opponents without mercy. If Julian filed for legal custody before Alex’s paternity was legally established, a drawn-out custody battle could tear the boys’ lives apart.

"He won't touch them," Alex vowed, his eyes ablaze with cold resolve. "I don't care how powerful Julian Vance thinks he is. Lucas and Noah are Sterlings. They are my sons."

Clara squeezed his hand one last time, her eyelids fluttering shut from exhaustion. "Love them, Alex. That's all I ever wanted... for them to have a father who loves them."

That night, Clara Vance slipped into a deep coma. Two days later, with Alex holding her left hand and the boys softly singing her favorite song at her bedside, she passed away quietly.
