Chapter 4 - The Custody WarThe funeral was private, held under a gray Manhattan sky. Alex stood in a black suit, holding Lucas with his right hand and Noah with his left. The boys wept quietly, clutching their father's legs just as they had in the lobby days before.

As the casket was lowered, a line of black luxury sedans pulled up along the cemetery path.

Out stepped Julian Vance. Tall, silver-haired, dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit, the legendary industrialist walked toward the grave with a cane, flanked by three high-powered family lawyers.

"Alexander," Julian said, his voice like grinding stones.

Alex didn't move an inch, keeping his sons firmly behind his body. "Julian. You're late for your daughter's funeral."

"I was signing the paperwork to secure my family's legacy," Julian replied coldly, taking a document from his lawyer and holding it out. "This is a temporary emergency custody petition filed with the New York Family Court. As the legitimate maternal grandfather, I am claiming custody of Lucas and Noah Vance."

"Their name is Sterling," Alex said, his tone icy enough to freeze the summer air.

"Is it?" Julian smirked. "Medical records from Greenwich General Hospital explicitly state that after your accident, you were rendered permanently infertile. My lawyers will argue in court tomorrow that these boys are the product of an affair Clara had with another man, and that you are using them to manipulate Vance Dynamics stock!"

"We already ran the DNA test, Julian," Alex revealed, stepping closer, his shadow towering over the older man. "The results came back this morning. Ninety-nine point nine percent match. They are my biological sons. The accident damaged me, but it didn't stop a miracle."

Julian's eyes flashed with a brief flicker of shock, but he quickly masked it with a sneer. "A DNA test from your private doctors means nothing in court until a court-appointed lab verifies it. Until then, you have no legal paternity rights. Hand over the boys, Alexander. Don't make me have the marshals take them from your arms at a cemetery."

Suddenly, Noah poked his head out from behind Alex’s leg. He looked up at the intimidating old man without fear.

"We aren't going with you!" Noah shouted, his small voice echoing across the quiet graveyard. "You never came to see Mama when she was sick! You're not our grandfather! Our Daddy is taking care of us!"

Julian looked down at the boy, his jaw tightening slightly. For a fraction of a second, something human flickered in the old billionaire's eyes—perhaps regret, or the realization of his own daughter's pain—but it was instantly swallowed by arrogance.

"Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, Alexander," Julian said quietly, turning back to his sedan. "Family Court. Let's see if your billions can buy off a judge who looks at your medical charts."

As the sedans drove away, Alex dropped to his knees in the damp grass and pulled his crying sons into his chest.

"Daddy," Lucas whimpered. "Are they going to make us leave you?"

Alex looked into the eyes of his children, the final, precious gift Clara had left him.

"Over my dead body," Alex promised.
