Chapter 2 - The Poisoner's Ledger

By 3:00 PM, the atmosphere inside the study of the Vale mansion felt like a war room on the eve of an invasion.

The room was lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves, but the central leather desk was covered in legal briefs, medical charts, and high-resolution digital scans. Outside the window, two state police cruisers sat parked near the fountain, their red and blue lights flashing silently against the grey stone walls.

Dr. Jonathan Mercer—the country’s leading pediatric toxicologist and a lifelong friend of Harrison’s family—stepped out of the downstairs medical wing, pulling off his latex gloves.

Harrison stood up from his desk instantly. "Jonathan? How is she?"

"We caught it just in time, Harrison," Dr. Mercer said, his face lined with profound relief mixed with professional disgust. "We administered a full gastric lavage and started her on an intravenous regimen of acetylcysteine and nerve-reversal agents. The compound Helena was administering is a synthetic derivative of a black-market pharmaceutical called Ocularis-N. It dilates the pupils to maximum capacity while simultaneously suppressing the optic nerve’s electrical signals."

"Will her vision recover?" Harrison asked, his hands trembling as he clutched the edge of his desk.

"Her optic nerve is inflamed, but it is not permanently damaged," Dr. Mercer confirmed. "Within forty-eight to seventy-two hours, as the toxin clears her lymphatic system, her eyesight will return completely. She is resting comfortably upstairs now, guarded by two state troopers."

Harrison let out a long, shuddering breath, dropping into his chair.

Sitting across from him was Richard Vance, Harrison’s chief legal counsel—a silver-haired veteran of corporate and criminal law who had represented the Vale family for thirty years. Beside Vance sat two special agents from the State Bureau of Investigation.

"Harrison," Richard Vance said, sliding a thick leather-bound binder across the mahogany table. "While Dr. Mercer was examining Sophie, my team and the state troopers executed a search warrant on Helena’s private suite and her personal safe-deposit box downtown."

"What did you find?" Harrison asked, his voice hollow.

"It wasn't just about controlling Sophie," Vance revealed, opening the binder to reveal a network of bank transfers and corporate filings. "It was a long-con assassination scheme."

Harrison looked up, his eyes narrowing. "Assassination?"

"Three years ago, when your first wife, Eleanor, died in that sudden boating accident off the coast of Maine..." Vance paused, looking at Harrison with solemn hesitation. "...we accepted the coast guard’s report that it was an engine explosion caused by a mechanical failure. But three weeks before that accident, Helena was hired as your corporate event coordinator."

Harrison’s blood ran cold. "Go on."

"Helena didn't act alone," Special Agent Miller of the SBI spoke up, pointing to a name highlighted at the top of a corporate organizational chart. "She is the biological sister of Julian Croft."

Harrison froze. Julian Croft was the founder and chief executive officer of Croft Bio-Tech—Vale Global’s primary competitor in the global pharmaceutical logistics market. For five years, Croft had been trying to launch a hostile takeover of Vale Global, but Harrison’s majority shareholding of fifty-one percent had made the company impenetrable.

"Under your current family trust structure," Vance explained, pointing to a paragraph in Harrison’s estate documents, "if you were to pass away or become incapacitated, your fifty-one percent controlling interest in Vale Global Holdings would pass directly to your sole surviving biological heir—Sophie."

Harrison’s breath hitched in his throat. "And if Sophie were declared legally blind and mentally incompetent due to chronic neurological deterioration..."

"...Then her legal court-appointed guardian would assume absolute voting control over the fifty-one percent majority shares," Vance finished softly. "And that legal guardian, under the pre-nuptial agreement you signed two years ago, would be your wife—Helena."

The full, horrifying puzzle clicked together in Harrison’s mind.

Helena hadn't married him out of love. She had been inserted into his life by Croft Bio-Tech. They had murdered his first wife, systematically poisoned his daughter to make her appear permanently disabled, and were preparing to liquidate his life’s work.

"Where is the money going?" Harrison asked, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper.

"Over the last two years, Helena has funneled over eight million dollars out of your personal household accounts into an offshore shell company called Aegis Holdings in the Cayman Islands," Vance said. "That shell company is owned directly by Julian Croft. But there’s something worse."

Vance pulled out a small black audio recording device seized from Helena’s nightstand.

"We ran a forensic recovery on her encrypted messaging apps," Vance said. "Yesterday morning, before you landed in Charlotte, Helena received an encrypted audio file from Julian Croft. Listen to this."

Vance hit the play button on the recorder.

A harsh, metallic voice echoed through the quiet study:

"Helena, the merger vote is scheduled for the fifteenth of next month. Harrison is getting suspicious about the accounting discrepancies. It’s time to move to Phase Three. Double the dosage on the girl to induce permanent paralysis, and make sure Harrison’s evening heart medication is swapped with the compound by Friday. Once he’s gone, we take total control of the board."

The recording stopped.

The study fell into a suffocating, absolute silence.

Harrison stood up slowly. He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the manicured lawns where his daughter had played as a toddler before the darkness took her. His face was a mask of cold, unyielding granite.

"Richard," Harrison said quietly.

"Yes, Harrison?"

"Do not let the state troopers arrest Helena yet."

Vance blinked in surprise. "Harrison, she tried to murder your daughter and was planning to murder you! We have enough evidence to put her away for life right now!"

Harrison turned around. His hazel eyes—the same eyes his daughter possessed—were burning with a terrifying, lethal intellect.

"If we arrest her now, Julian Croft will cut his losses, destroy his server logs, and hide behind his legal team in the Caymans," Harrison said. "I don't just want Helena in a prison cell, Richard. I want Julian Croft, his board of directors, and every single person who touched my daughter’s life destroyed beyond recognition."

Harrison walked over to the desk, picking up his phone. "Agent Miller, can your team mirror Helena’s phone without her knowing she’s been compromised?"

May you like

"Easily," Agent Miller replied. "We can create a digital clone of her phone in ten minutes."

"Good," Harrison declared. "Then we are going to give my loving wife exactly what she wants. We are going to let her think her plan is working... until the moment I tear her world apart."
