Chapter 3 - The Cold Iron of ManhattanThe garage fell into a suffocating, razor-sharp silence.

Vincent Morchetti froze, his boot hovering an inch above the oil-stained concrete. He looked at the black barrel of Cael Sanna’s custom weapon, then at the eyes of the man holding it. He saw no hesitation, no political posturing, and no fear—only pure, unadulterated executioner’s resolve.

"Easy, Sanna," Morchetti rasped, slowly raising his hands to shoulder height, his cold smile fading into a tense glare. "We’re all businessmen here. No need to spill blood over a blind girl."

"She has a name," Cael said, his finger resting lightly against the trigger. "And if you speak it again with that tongue, I will cut it out."

"Boss," Dario murmured softly from Cael's right flank, his eyes locked on the two gunmen standing behind Morchetti. "Port Authority police just entered the upper ramp."

Morchetti took two slow steps backward toward his sedan, his eyes never leaving Cael’s face. "This isn't over, Sanna. The Chicago board wants those docks. You can't guard a blind girl twenty-four hours a day."

"Try me," Cael replied coldly.

Morchetti climbed into the rear seat of his sedan, and the three black vehicles reversed out of the underground bay, their tires screeching loudly against the slick concrete as they vanished into the stormy night.

Cael slowly lowered his weapon, engaging the safety catch with a soft click, and holstered it beneath his coat.

He turned back to Nadia.

She had not screamed. She had not crouched or wept. She stood against the elevator wall, her chin lifted high, her pale fingers wrapped around her white cane, her chest rising and falling in rapid, controlled breaths.

"You didn't run," Cael said softly, stepping back into her personal space.

"I can't see where the exit is, Mr. Sanna," Nadia said, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound composed. "Running into a crossfire would be stupid."

"You're shaking," Cael observed, his hand rising to gently cover hers where it gripped the white cane. His touch was warm, solid, and surprisingly gentle for a hand that had held a lethal weapon three seconds prior.

"I am not shaking because of the guns," Nadia whispered, pulling her hand back slightly. "I am shaking because I know that tone in your voice. You're a killer."

Cael went quiet.

The sound of rain pouring down the drainage pipes was the only audio left in the vast garage.

"I am a man who protects what belongs to him, Nadia," Cael said quietly.

"I told you," Nadia looked directly into his eyes, though she could only see his dark, towering outline. "I do not belong to you."

"Then let me be your shield until Morchetti is in the ground," Cael said softly, opening the rear door of his armored SUV. "Because after tonight, he knows you are my heart. And he will use you to reach me."

Nadia felt a cold shiver run down her spine. His heart. The words landed with the weight of an anchor dropping into deep water.

She took a slow, deep breath, accepted the hand he offered, and stepped into the warm leather interior of the armored vehicle.
