Chapter 4 - The Siege of Lake Forest

Inside the dark, steel-lined panic room, the air was cold and smelled of ozone and concrete.

The heavy titanium door muffled the terrifying sounds outside, but the vibration of heavy gunfire and grenade detonations still rattled through the floorboards.

Sadi sat on the floor with her back against the reinforced wall, pulling Noel tight against her chest. She held her hands firmly over the little girl’s ears, rocking her back and forth in the dark.

"It's okay, baby," Sadi sobbed softly, tears streaming down her face. "It's okay. Your daddy is fighting for us. He's coming back."

Noel didn't cry out loud, but her small body was shaking violently. She buried her face into Sadi’s neck, her tiny fingers clutching Sadi’s cotton shirt so hard her knuckles turned white.

Outside the panic room, the Lake Forest estate had turned into a hellish warzone.

Corbin Valleti moved through the dark, smoke-filled upper corridor like a demon born of fire and lead.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

His heavy pistol spat fire in the gloom. Three masked mercenaries advancing up the grand staircase fell backward, tumbling down the marble steps into the shattered foyer below.

"Corbin!" Finch shouted, firing his submachine gun from behind a marble pillar at the top of the stairs. "There are at least fifteen of them! They cut the main power lines!"

"Keep them off the second floor!" Corbin roared, reloading his weapon with lethal speed. "They came for my daughter, Finch! None of them leave this house alive!"

From the dark foyer below, a harsh, raspy voice echoed over the sound of gunfire and alarms.

"Corbin!" the voice mocked, filled with cruel, triumphant laughter. "Come down, Corbin! Let's talk about Penny! Let's talk about how she died while you hid behind her!"

Corbin’s eyes flared with a lethal, terrifying rage.

Omar Cigretti stood in the middle of the ruined foyer, wearing a long trench coat, holding an assault rifle, flanked by four heavily armed enforcers. His face was twisted into a grotesque, scarred sneer.

"You took my territory, Valleti!" Cigretti screamed, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "You took my money! Now I'm taking your little girl! Where is she, Corbin? Is she hiding like her daddy?!"

Corbin looked at Finch, giving him a subtle hand signal. Finch nodded grimly, shifting his position to flank the left side of the balcony.

Corbin stepped out into the open at the top of the grand staircase, his heavy weapon lowered at his side, staring down at his mortal enemy.

"Omar," Corbin said, his voice terrifyingly calm, cutting through the ringing alarms. "You should have stayed in Indiana."

Cigretti sneered, raising his rifle. "Kill him!"

Fire erupted in the foyer.

Corbin threw himself over the marble balustrade, sliding down the side stairs, firing continuously as he fell.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Two of Cigretti’s guards collapsed, blood splattering across the polished marble floor. Finch opened fire from the balcony, cutting down a third mercenary who was trying to flank the stairs.

Corbin hit the ground floor, rolling behind a fallen leather sofa as bullets tore through the upholstery, sending feathers and leather flying into the air.

He popped up, firing two precise rounds into the chest of the last mercenary.

Now, only Omar Cigretti remained standing in the center of the dark, smoke-choked foyer.

Cigretti’s rifle clicked empty. He cursed, dropping the heavy weapon and pulling a long hunting knife from his belt, his eyes wild with desperate rage.

"I killed your wife, Valleti!" Cigretti screamed, rushing forward like a madman. "And I'm going to carve your heart out!"

Corbin didn't shoot.

He dropped his empty pistol onto the bloody floor, stepped out from behind the sofa, and met Cigretti head-on.

Cigretti lunged, thrusting the blade toward Corbin’s throat. Corbin dodged sideways, the blade slicing through his white shirt, grazing his ribs. Ignoring the pain, Corbin grabbed Cigretti’s wrist, twisting it violently until the bone snapped with a sickening CRACK.

Cigretti screamed in agony, dropping the knife.

Corbin grabbed Cigretti by the throat with both hands, slamming the heavy mafia boss back against the central marble fountain. The stone cracked under the impact.

"Penny..." Corbin growled, his face inches from Cigretti’s, his green-gray eyes burning with absolute, terrifying vengeance. "...sends her regards."

With a single, violent surge of strength, Corbin slammed Cigretti’s head into the marble fountain edge.

Cigretti went limp, collapsing into the blood-stained water of the pool below, motionless.

Silence descended over the ruined mansion.

The heavy gunfire ceased. The smoke began to clear, drifting slowly out through the shattered front doors into the rainy night air.

Corbin stood over his enemy’s body, his chest heaving, blood dripping from his side where the knife had grazed him.

Finch hurried down the ruined stairs, his weapon lowered, checking the pulse of the fallen mercenaries. "It's over, boss. All of them are down. The police response detail we paid off will be here in twenty minutes to clean this up."

Corbin didn't answer. He didn't care about Cigretti. He didn't care about the police.

He turned and ran back up the stairs, his heart pounding in his chest with a terrifying, desperate panic.

"Sadi!" he shouted, throwing open the door to the guest bedroom. "Sadi!"

He rushed to the closet, punching the emergency code into the biometric panel.

The heavy titanium door hissed and slid open.

Inside, sitting in the dark corner, was Sadi. She was holding Noel in her lap, her eyes wide with terror, tears streaking her face.

When the light flooded the room and she saw Corbin standing in the doorway—covered in smoke, sweat, and blood—she let out a ragged, gasping sob.

"Corbin!" Sadi cried out.

Corbin dropped to his knees, throwing his arms around both of them, pulling them tightly against his chest. He buried his face in Sadi’s neck, weeping silently as he held them close.

"You're safe," Corbin rasped, his voice trembling violently. "You're safe. I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..."

Sadi wrapped her arms around his neck, ignoring the blood on his shirt, holding him with all the strength she possessed. "You came back," she sobbed into his shoulder. "You came back for us."

Then, a tiny, clear sound cut through their weeping.

Small fingers tugged gently on Corbin’s bloody shirt collar.

Corbin pulled back slightly, looking down.

Noel was looking up at him. Her eyes were no longer empty, no longer distant. They were wide, clear, and filled with tears.

She lifted her small hands, cupping both of Corbin’s bruised cheeks.

"Daddy..." Noel whispered softly, her voice raspy from eight months of silence, but clear as a silver bell. "...don't cry."

Corbin froze. His heart stopped beating.

He stared at his daughter, tears bursting from his eyes in a overwhelming wave of pure, unadulterated joy.

"Noel..." Corbin sobbed, lifting his daughter into his arms, kissing her face over and over again. "My baby... my sweet girl..."

Noel wrapped her arms around her father's neck, holding him tight. Then, she extended one small arm, reaching toward Sadi.

May you like

"Sadi," Noel whispered, smiling through her tears. "Come here."

Sadi broke into fresh tears of joy, joining their embrace, wrapping her arms around the father and daughter as the golden light of dawn began to break over the peaceful gardens outside.
