Chapter 5 - The Shadows Closing In

Back inside the manor, the atmosphere was thick with unspoken tension. Clara sat in the corner of the vast library, staring out the window at the dark waters of the lake while the rain began to fall again.

The door opened softly, and Matteo walked in. He held two cups of steaming black coffee, placing one on the mahogany table beside her before leaning against the bookshelf.

"He won't bother you again," Matteo said.

Clara looked up, her gray eyes swimming with unshed tears. "You didn't have to do that, Matteo. He’s my past. I can handle my own mess."

"You shouldn't have to," Matteo replied, his gaze intense. "In this house, what belongs to my perimeter belongs to my protection."

"I am not your property, Matteo," Clara flashed back, a sudden surge of pride overriding her fear. "I’m a maid. I clean your floors, I wash your dog, and I earn my wage. I am not another ledger entry for you to manage."

Matteo pushed off the bookshelf, stepping close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from him. He didn't look angry; he looked profoundly weary of a life built entirely on walls and weapons.

"You think I see you as a ledger entry?" Matteo murmured, his hand reaching out to gently touch her hair. "Clara... from the moment you fell in that courtyard and looked my dog in the eye instead of running away, you broke every rule I built my life around."

Before Clara could answer, the estate’s internal security alarm shrieked—a loud, piercing klaxon that echoed through every corridor of the mansion.

Arthur’s voice burst through the intercom, breathless and urgent. "Boss! We’ve got an armed breach at the north boathouse! Milan enforcers—Dante’s men. They’ve locked down the perimeter!"

Matteo’s expression froze into absolute, lethal ice. He looked down at Clara, his eyes burning with a desperate, fierce resolve.

"Stay in this room," Matteo ordered, drawing a heavy black firearm from his shoulder holster with fluid precision. "Lock the door. If I don't come back in twenty minutes... take Bruno and run through the secret exit behind the fireplace."

"Matteo, no—" she gasped, grabbing his sleeve.

He pressed a fierce, hard kiss to her forehead, then turned and vanished into the corridor, plunging headfirst into the war for his own empire.
