Chapter 6 - The True Empire

The battle for the Moretti estate was swift, brutal, and entirely contained within the shadows of the north boathouse. Dante’s coup had failed before it even crossed the threshold; Matteo’s loyal guards, warned hours in advance by loyal surveillance teams, had trapped the rogue enforcers in a crossfire of steel and authority.

By sunrise, the storm had passed. The lake was a sheet of smooth glass reflecting the brilliant morning sun.

In the grand solarium, Bruno lay sleeping peacefully by the heated stones. Clara sat in the center velvet armchair, pale, clutching a cup of cold tea, watching the double doors.

Heavy, unhurried footsteps echoed across the marble foyer.

The doors pushed open. Matteo walked in. His suit jacket was gone, his white shirt stained with dirt at the cuff, a faint graze across his left cheekbone. But his stance was upright, his head held high, and his amber eyes burned with absolute victory.

"It’s over," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a soft, gravelly murmur as he crossed the room and stopped directly in front of her. "Dante and his loyalists are on a one-way flight to South America. The council has reaffirmed my leadership unanimously."

Clara stood up, her breath catching in her throat. "You’re hurt."

"It’s nothing," Matteo dismissed with a slight shake of his head. He reached out, his warm, calloused hands gently framing her face. "When I was walking back through the courtyard... all I could think about was whether you were safe."

"I was terrified you weren't coming back," Clara whispered, a tear finally escaping and tracking down her cheek.

Matteo wiped it away with his thumb, leaning down until his forehead rested against hers. "I survived wars, assassinations, and corporate bloodbaths, Clara. I am not about to lose the only real thing I’ve ever found in the dark."

He pulled her flush against his chest, holding her as if she were the anchor that kept his entire world from drifting into the abyss. Bruno let out a soft, contented grunt from the floor, blinking sleepily at them.

She had arrived at the estate as a clumsy, desperate maid running from a broken past. But as Matteo kissed her—slowly, deeply, with a devotion that defied every law of his violent world—she knew she was no longer running.

She had found her fortress. And she was never leaving.
