Chapter 4 - The Strike at Dawn

By 4:00 AM, the storm outside had cleared, leaving behind a cold, crisp Chicago dawn that painted the sky in shades of bruised purple and slate gray.
Inside the subterranean garage, the atmosphere was charged with lethal purpose. The multi-million-dollar fleet of luxury vehicles was still parked under the security lights, but the usual hum of estate maintenance had been replaced by the low, tactical murmur of twenty heavily armed Dantis enforcers standing in formation.
Adrian Cole and Celeste Marlow were no longer in the holding cells. They stood near the center of the garage, handcuffed to a steel pillar, guarded by two veterans who looked like they hadn't slept in a week.
Celeste’s silk robe was stained with grease from the concrete floor, her hair tangled, her mascara smeared across her cheeks. She was sobbing hysterically, alternating between screaming threats about her father’s influence and begging Luca for mercy.
“Luca, please!” Celeste shrieked as she saw him approach, flanked by Anthony and Norah. “You can’t do this! We’re supposed to be married! My family will tear your entire organization apart brick by brick!”
Luca didn't even look at her. He walked past her as if she were a piece of discarded trash, stopping in front of Adrian Cole.
Adrian’s lip was split, and a dark bruise covered his jaw where Anthony had struck him an hour earlier. Yet, the traitorous head of security managed a crooked, defiant smirk.
“You think killing us solves anything, Dantis?” Adrian spat, blood flecking his teeth. “The Caruso family already knows I didn't check in at 3:00 AM. Their strike teams are moving toward your warehouses in the north district right now. By noon, your entire supply chain will be burning to the ground.”
Luca calmly pulled a cigar from his pocket, bit off the end, and lit it with a small gold lighter. He exhaled a thin plume of blue smoke into the chilly garage air before speaking.
“Adrian, you were always a competent tactician,” Luca said smoothly, his voice dangerously calm. “But you made one fatal miscalculation.”
“What’s that?” Adrian scoffed. 🔗
“You assumed that because someone wore a gray uniform and cleaned our floors, she didn't understand how engines work,” Luca replied, gesturing toward Norah.
Norah stepped forward from the shadows, carrying a rugged, heavy-duty laptop connected to a sprawling bundle of cables. She walked right up to the diagnostic port of Celeste’s armored SUV—the very vehicle where she had uncovered the conspiracy hours earlier.
“What is she doing?” Adrian asked, his defiant smirk finally faltering as he saw the focused determination in Norah’s eyes.
“When your strike teams moved toward my northern warehouses twenty minutes ago,” Luca explained, watching Adrian’s face closely, “they used the encrypted GPS transponders built into their transport trucks—transponders that communicate directly with the fleet management software housed on this exact vehicle’s central server.”
Norah’s fingers flew across the laptop keyboard with blinding speed. Lines of green code scrolled down the dark screen.
“I spent the last two hours reverse-engineering the telemetry encryption protocols that Adrian installed to monitor the Caruso supply routes,” Norah announced, her voice ringing clear and strong through the garage. “I didn't just access the audio files. I bypassed their firewall and mapped every single active GPS signal belonging to the Caruso syndicate across the entire Midwest.”
Celeste stopped crying, staring at Norah in sheer horror. “What did you do?”
“I didn't just track them,” Norah said, pressing the final Enter key with a decisive click. “I hijacked their navigation grid. Right now, every single transport truck belonging to your father’s logistics network has just received an automated system override telling them their primary depot has been relocated—straight into the federal impound yard behind the O’Hare precinct, escorted by three anonymous tips to the FBI.”
Adrian’s face drained of every remaining drop of color. He slammed his body against the steel pillar, the handcuffs rattling violently. “You bitch! You just handed our entire distribution network to federal investigators on a silver platter!”
“Not just the distribution network,” Anthony added, stepping forward with a cold, triumphant grin as his phone buzzed in his pocket with a encrypted update from their scouts. “Our industrial strike teams just hit the Caruso main warehouse on 5th Avenue. Without their transport trucks to move inventory, their entire operation is sitting ducks. By sunrise, the Carusos won't have enough capital left to buy a cup of coffee, let alone start a war.”
Luca took a slow drag of his cigar, looking down at Adrian and Celeste with absolute contempt.

“You wanted to destroy my family,” Luca said quietly. “Instead, you provided the exact excuse I needed to dismantle yours.”
He turned to his lead enforcer. “Take them down to the lower docks. Put them on a freighter bound for South America before the sun clears the horizon. Make sure they understand that if they ever set foot in Chicago again, the fish won't even leave bones.”
