Chapter 6 - A New Horizon
Six months later, the grounds of the Dantis estate looked entirely transformed.
The high stone walls and security cameras were still present—this was still a world that required protection—but the oppressive, militaristic atmosphere had been replaced by vibrant gardens, open courtyard cafes, and the constant, productive hum of innovation.
On a crisp autumn morning, the newly restored Bennett Auto Diagnostics facility on Maple Street was buzzing with activity. Delivery trucks bearing the sleek new logo of Bennett-Dantis Technologies rolled out of the pristine brick bays, carrying advanced vehicle navigation systems and encrypted logistics software across the Midwest.
Inside the executive office overlooking the main garage floor, Norah stood by the window, wearing a tailored charcoal blazer over a silk blouse, her hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders. She looked out over the thriving shop floor where young engineers and mechanics worked side by side, restoring classic engines and building the future of sustainable transportation.
The door opened softly, and footsteps crossed the plush rug.
Luca walked in, carrying two cups of hot coffee. He handed one to Norah, wrapping his free arm around her waist from behind and resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder.
“You’ve been staring at the assembly line for twenty minutes,” Luca murmured into her hair, smiling. “Are the torque specifications off again?”
“No,” Norah laughed, leaning back against his chest and taking a sip of the coffee. “I was just thinking about the first night we really talked—down in that cold garage, covered in grease, holding a memory card and wondering if I was going to survive the night.”
Luca’s arm tightened around her waist, pulling her a little closer. “You didn't just survive, Norah. You completely re-engineered my entire world.”
“We did,” Norah corrected gently, turning around in his arms to face him. She reached up, her fingers tracing the sharp line of his jawline—the same jawline she had watched from a distance for nine long months while cleaning his floors and hiding in plain sight.
