Chapter 5 - Shadows at the GatesFor the next two months, the Russo estate underwent a radical transformation.

The cold, sterile fortress of a paranoid cartel boss was slowly infiltrated by the undeniable chaos of impending parenthood. The west wing was completely remodeled; a sunlit nursery with custom white-oak furniture and pastel walls was built directly adjacent to the master suite. Pediatric specialists, nutritionists, and private OB-GYNs paraded through the front gates under heavy guard, ensuring that Norah and the baby received absolute, uncompromised care.

Dominic became a constant, suffocating presence.

He cleared his schedule, delegating day-to-day operations to his capos so he could spend hours sitting beside Norah in the garden, his hand resting possessively over her heavily rounded belly as she read or slept. The oversized thrift-store sweaters were long gone, replaced by soft silk dresses and cashmere cardigans that celebrated her changing body rather than hiding it.

Yet, beneath the domestic bliss, the dark underbelly of the criminal underworld continued to churn.

Word had leaked.

In a world built on whispers and wiretaps, keeping a pregnancy secret from rival syndicates was impossible once medical couriers and private obstetricians began making daily visits to the heavily guarded compound.

It was late June, exactly six weeks before Norah’s due date, when the first real threat materialized.

It was 2:00 a.m.

Norah woke up to the muffled, concussive thud of an explosion echoing from the perimeter gates.

Instantly, the estate’s emergency klaxons began to wail, flashing a strobing red light across the ceiling of the master suite.

Dominic was out of bed before the second alarm sound finished echoing. He didn't panic; his movements were terrifyingly efficient. He pulled a custom Sig Sauer P226 from the nightstand drawer, chambered a round, and turned to Norah, who was sitting up in bed, clutching her swollen belly, her face pale with terror.

“Stay in the safe room behind the walk-in closet,” Dominic ordered, his voice cold and steady. “Marcus and the inner detail are already securing the corridor.”

“Dominic, no—!” Norah gasped, grabbing his arm. “They’re coming for us, aren't they? They know about the baby!”

Dominic looked down at her. He leaned in, pressing a fierce, lingering kiss to her forehead.

“They are going to learn very quickly what happens when you wake a sleeping beast,” Dominic whispered. “Lock the door. Do not open it for anyone’s voice except mine. If you hear shooting, stay on the floor.”

Before Norah could argue, he slipped out of the bedroom, closing the heavy reinforced door behind him.

The next twenty minutes were a waking nightmare.

Gunfire crackled through the night air—sharp, rhythmic bursts of assault rifles clashing against the estate’s automated security turrets and armed guards. Shouts echoed from the courtyard below. The sound of breaking glass from the lower levels sent shudders down Norah’s spine.

She sat curled up on the reinforced concrete floor of the hidden safe room behind the walk-in closet, holding her breath, whispering desperate prayers to a God she hadn't prayed to in years. Her baby kicked frantically against her ribs, sensing her terror.

“It’s okay, little one,” Norah wept softly, rubbing her stomach. “Daddy is going to keep us safe. Your daddy is a monster to everyone else, but he’s ours.”

Then, abruptly, the gunfire stopped.

Silence descended over the compound—a heavy, suffocating silence that was even more terrifying than the noise.

Minutes stretched into eternity.

Tap. Tap-tap.

A familiar, measured knock sounded on the safe room door.

“Norah.”

Dominic’s voice.

Norah scrambled across the floor, unlocked the heavy steel bolt, and threw the door open.

Dominic stood in the doorway. His dark Henley was torn at the shoulder. A shallow graze across his jaw was dripping a thin line of blood onto his collar. He looked tired, dirt-stained, and absolutely lethal.

“Are you hurt? Is the baby okay?” Norah gasped, running her hands frantically over his chest to check for wounds.

“I’m fine,” Dominic said, catching her hands and pulling her into a tight, crushing embrace. He buried his face in her hair, his massive shoulders trembling slightly with the adrenaline crash. “They’re gone, Norah. The threat has been neutralized.”

“Who was it?” she whispered against his chest.

“The Moretti family,” Dominic replied, his voice dropping into a dark, venomous register. “They thought my attention was divided. They thought a family made me weak.”

He pulled back, looking down at her with eyes that burned like hot coals.

“They just signed their own death warrants. By sunrise, there won't be a single member of the Moretti syndicate left breathing in this state.”
