Chapter 6 - The Final LedgerThree weeks later, the war was over.

The Moretti family had been systematically dismantled in a single, brutal weekend of retributive violence that made national headlines as a suspected cartel civil war. By the time federal investigators arrived to piece together the wreckage, the leadership had vanished, the assets had been frozen or seized, and the streets of the city belonged entirely to the Russo syndicate once more.

But inside the master suite of the Russo estate, the world had shrunk down to the size of a bassinet.

The delivery had been fast, fierce, and entirely overwhelming. Dr. Vance and a team of private medical professionals had managed the birth inside the estate’s newly equipped surgical suite, ensuring that mother and child never had to risk exposure at a public hospital.

Now, golden afternoon sunlight streamed through the bulletproof floor-to-ceiling windows, warming the hardwood floors of the nursery.

Norah sat in a comfortable rocking chair, cradling a tiny, perfect bundle wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket.

A soft knock sounded at the open nursery door.

Dominic stepped inside. He had traded his tactical gear and blood-stained Henley for a simple black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His knuckles were still slightly bruised, but his expression was one of profound, unshakeable peace.

He walked over slowly, kneeling beside the rocking chair.

“How is our son doing?” Dominic asked softly, his voice dropping into a gentle cadence he reserved only for the two people in the world who owned his soul.

“He’s sleeping,” Norah smiled, looking down at the baby’s tiny, rosebud lips and dark tuft of hair. “He has your stubborn nose.”

Dominic reached out, his large, calloused finger gently brushing the baby’s cheek. The infant shifted slightly, letting out a soft sigh before settling back into a deep, untroubled sleep.

“Leo,” Dominic said quietly.

Norah looked up, blinking in surprise. “Leo Russo?”

“Leo,” Dominic confirmed, looking up from the baby to meet her green eyes. “It means lion. A protector. Someone who will never have to hide who he is, or what family he belongs to.”

Norah felt a warm tear slip down her cheek, but this time, it was born entirely of relief and happiness.

She reached out with her free hand, resting her palm against the side of Dominic’s face. He leaned into her touch, closing his eyes for a moment as if anchoring himself to the only reality that mattered.

“You know,” Norah murmured, a faint, teasing smile touching her lips, “when I first started working here, I thought you were just a paranoid criminal who drank too much bourbon and terrified the staff.”

Dominic opened his eyes, a slow, rare smile curving the corners of his mouth.

“And what do you think now, Miss Hayes?”

“I think,” Norah said, looking down at their son before returning her gaze to the most dangerous man in the city, “that you’re the best bodyguard our family could ever ask for.”

Dominic chuckled, a rich, genuine sound that echoed softly through the sunlit room, sealing the final ledger of their chaotic, terrifying, and deeply devoted lives together.
