PART 2 — The Maid’s Defiance

The burning in my throat was agonizing, a suffocating heat that paralyzed my vocal cords. I could feel the chemical liquid invading my system, its sedating effects already clawing at the edges of my consciousness. Victoria’s grip was unyielding; she was a woman possessed by the singular, terrifying obsession of absolute control. The rim of the paper cup cut into my gums, drawing a thin line of metallic-tasting blood that mingled with the bitter fluid.

Then, the heavy oak doors of the library slammed open.

"Stop! She didn't sign!"

The panicked voice shattered the terrible silence of the room. Through my one unobstructed eye, I saw Elena, the young maid, running across the Persian rug. She was twenty-four, a local girl from the valley who had been the only human being to show me a shred of kindness during my months of forced isolation. She wore the classic black-and-white uniform of the Sterling household staff, her white apron fluttering as she moved with frantic, terrified urgency.

Victoria didn't let go immediately. She shot a look of profound, aristocratic disgust toward the doorway. "Get out of here, Elena! This is private family business. Return to your quarters or you will be dismissed without a reference before the hour ends!"

"No, Madam! I won't let you do this!" Elena cried, her face pale and distorted with distress.

Elena didn't listen to the threat. She threw herself into the space between my wheelchair and the desk, her hands clasped in desperation before she reached out and aggressively grabbed Victoria’s forearm. She pulled with all her weight, trying to break the older woman’s grip on my head.

"Let her go! You’re killing her!" Elena pleaded, her voice cracking as she wrestled against the matriarch. "I saw the labels on those bottles in your vanity, Victoria! That’s not medicine! You’re poisoning her just like you did to the old master!"

The mention of Julian's father sent an electric shock through the room. Victoria’s face went completely purple with a mixture of fear and absolute fury. She released her grip on my neck so suddenly that my head snapped forward, a wave of intense nausea washing over me as I coughed out the remaining drops of the chemical fluid.

Victoria turned on Elena like a viper, her eyes narrowing into slits as she shook her arm free from the maid's grasp. "How dare you," she whispered, her voice dangerously quiet, her teeth slightly bared as she adjusted the cuffs of her dark blue suit. "How dare a common servant bring such vile, slanderous accusations into my house. You are nothing but dirt beneath the foundation of this estate."

"I know what I saw," Elena said, her hands trembling as she stepped backward, positioning her body directly between Victoria and my wheelchair. She looked down at me, her eyes filled with tears. "Clara, hold on. Just hold on. Don't let her make you sign anything."

The two women stood near the massive wooden desk, a psychological battleground covered in corporate deeds, transfer titles, and the overturned amber pill bottle that was now leaking small white tablets across the dark mahogany wood. Elena looked completely desperate, her hands clasped tightly against her chest as if praying for a miracle, while Victoria stood tall, authoritative, and utterly devoid of human empathy.

"You think you are a hero, Elena?" Victoria said, a cold, mocking laugh escaping her lips. "You are an accomplice if you interfere with the legal execution of this trust. Clara is mentally incompetent. Her doctors—the doctors I pay for—have documented her decline. I am simply administering her prescribed treatment."

"You're lying," I choked out from the chair, my fingers weakly gripping the armrests. My vision was dimming at the edges, a heavy gray fog rolling into my mind as the drug began to take hold. "Elena... get help... call Julian..."

"Julian cannot save you, Clara," Victoria said, turning her gaze back to me, ignoring the maid completely. "No one can."
