PART 4 — The Shock at the Threshold

The heavy double doors of the library flew open for the second time, but this time, there was no scream, no panic. There was only a sudden, freezing silence that seemed to instantly drop the temperature of the room to zero.
Victoria froze, her foot remaining suspended in the air above my trembling fingers.
I turned my head slowly, my vision blurred by tears and blood, looking toward the threshold of the room. Standing in the grand doorway, framed by the bright light of the foyer, was a young man in a sharp grey formal suit. He was in his mid-20s, his dark hair slightly disheveled from travel, his hand still gripping the handle of a black rolling suitcase that stood beside him.
It was Julian.
He had caught an earlier flight, bypassing his mother's carefully constructed timeline, arriving home twenty-four hours ahead of schedule.
Julian stood entirely paralyzed, his eyes wide with a horrific, incomprehensible shock. His mouth hung open in a silent gasp as his gaze swept across the chaotic, violent scene before him—the overturned wheelchair, the scattered legal documents drifting across the floor, the white pills, the bleeding maid crying in the corner, and his wife, bruised, battered, and face-down on the floor, desperately clutching his mother’s leg.
"Clara?" Julian’s voice finally broke through his paralysis, a high, cracked whisper that sounded like a child looking at a nightmare.
"Julian..." I whimpered, my strength finally failing me as my fingers slipped away from Victoria's high-heel shoe, my head falling back onto the polished wood. "Julian... help me..."
The black rolling suitcase clattered to the floor as Julian let go of the handle. Within a fraction of a second, his expression of shock transformed into a raw, feral fury that I had never seen on his face before. He sprinted across the room, his leather dress shoes tearing through the scattered papers as he threw himself onto the floor beside me.
"Clara! Oh my god, Clara!" he gasped, his hands trembling violently as he lifted my upper body, pulling my bleeding face into his chest. He looked at the deep bruises around my eyes, the chemical stains on my shirt, and the unnatural angle of my twisted wheelchair. "What happened to you? What did she do to you?"
Victoria instantly recovered her composure, her aristocratic training overriding her panic as she smoothed down the front of her navy blue blazer, her face twisting into a mask of maternal concern.
"Julian, thank goodness you're home," Victoria said, her voice instantly shifting back into its smooth, manipulative purr. "It was an absolute nightmare. Clara had a sudden psychotic episode. She became completely violent, attacked poor Elena, threw the medication across the room, and overturned her own chair before I could restrain her. I was just trying to help her up—"
"Shut up!" Julian roared, the sound from his chest shaking the crystal chandelier above us. He didn't look up at his mother; his eyes were fixed on my face, his thumb gently wiping away the blood at my temple. "Don't you dare speak another lie in my presence, Mother."
He looked over at Elena, who was still kneeling near the armchair, clutching her bruised cheek. "Elena... tell me the truth. Right now."
May you like
"She was poisoning her, Mr. Julian," Elena sobbed, pointing a shaking finger at the overturned paper cup. "She was forcing her to drink adult sedatives to make her sign the transfer documents before your flight landed. When Clara refused, she knocked her out of her chair."
Julian’s chest heaved with a violent, ragged breath as the final illusion of his mother’s honor died on the floor of the library.
