Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The grand courtyard of Villa Moretti was illuminated by the harsh, white glare of dozens of security floodlights. Rain had begun to fall over Milan, slicking the cobblestones and casting long, dark reflections of the armed men stationed along the perimeter walls.
At the center of the courtyard stood Don Alberto Romano—a heavy-set man in his late sixties wearing an expensive tailored coat, flanked by four bodyguards holding submachine guns. Behind him, ten luxury SUVs were parked in a tight V-formation, their engines idling loudly.
The heavy iron doors of the villa swung open.
Alessandro stepped out onto the marble porch, unbothered by the rain soaking through his suit. He was accompanied only by Matteo and six of his elite guards. He didn't carry a rifle; his hand rested casually inside his coat pocket.
"Romano," Alessandro called out, his voice cutting through the sound of the falling rain and idling engines. "You breach my gates at midnight? You forget whose land you are standing on."
Don Alberto took a step forward, his face flushed with anger. "You humiliated my daughter, Moretti! You stripped her of her security clearance and threw her into a cell like a common thief in front of the entire Commission! I demand an explanation, or this alliance is dead!"
"The alliance was dead the moment you ordered the hit on Julian Bennett two years ago," Alessandro replied smoothly.
Don Alberto froze. A subtle flicker of panic crossed his weathered face before he masked it with an arrogant sneer.
"I don't know what garbage you're talking about," Alberto spat. "Bennett was a low-level union rat who died in a propane leak. If you're breaking our contract over the words of a dead clerk's widow, you've lost your mind, Alessandro."
Alessandro pulled the hardware wallet from his pocket and held it up between two fingers. The floodlights caught the titanium sheen of the drive.
"We unlocked the bear, Alberto," Alessandro said softly.
Don Alberto’s eyes widened. The color completely drained from his face, leaving him looking frail and old under the glaring lights.
"You... you found it," Alberto whispered.
"Every wire transfer," Alessandro said, stepping down the marble stairs one by one, completely unfazed by the four bodyguards pointing weapons at his chest. "Every offshore account. Every recorded conversation between your daughter and the Black Crown syndicate. You didn't just try to overthrow me, Alberto. You used my own household to conceal your treason."
"Kill him!" Don Alberto suddenly screamed, scrambling backward toward his SUV. "KILL THEM ALL! TAKE THE DRIVE!"
The courtyard erupted into chaos.
Don Romano's bodyguards opened fire, but before their bullets could clear the air, Alessandro’s snipers positioned on the villa’s roof took action. High-caliber suppressors clacked through the night sky. The four men surrounding Alberto collapsed instantly to the wet cobblestones.
Alessandro moved with terrifying speed. He drew his sidearm, firing three precise shots that shattered the windshields of the lead SUVs, disabling their drivers before they could put the vehicles in gear.
Matteo and the Moretti enforcers surged forward, unleashing a wall of suppressive fire that forced the remaining Romano mercenaries back behind their armored doors.
Don Alberto stumbled in the rain, slipping on the wet stones as he tried to open the door of his vehicle.
Before his hands could touch the handle, a heavy leather boot slammed into his chest, throwing him flat onto his back in the pooling rainwater.
Alessandro stood over him, his gun pointed straight between Don Romano’s eyes. Rain dripped from the barrel of the weapon onto Alberto's forehead.
"Please... Alessandro..." Alberto whimpered, holding his hands up in surrender, his former arrogance completely crushed. "It was Vivian! It was her idea! She wanted the power! She wanted to control the northern ports! Don't kill me!"
"A father who blames his daughter for his own treason is not a man," Alessandro said coldly. "He is a coward."

Alessandro lowered the barrel of his gun slightly and fired a single round into Alberto's leg. The old man shrieked in agony, clutching his shattered kneecap as he rolled in the mud.
"Lock him in the subterranean holding cells alongside his daughter," Alessandro ordered as Matteo rushed forward with heavy steel restraints. "And contact Don Ricci. Tell him the Commission meets at dawn. We are liquidating the entire Romano network by noon."
