Chapter 2 - The Syndicate’s Ledger

The private study on the third floor of the Duca estate was a fortress of dark mahogany, leather-bound books, and heavy velvet drapes that blocked out the morning light. When Amelia pushed the door open, Lorenzo was standing by the antique globe, his sleeves rolled up to reveal thick, corded forearms covered in faint scars—the quiet physical history of a life carved out in violence.
He turned as she entered, his dark gaze instantly assessing her.
"You didn't sleep well," Lorenzo stated flatly, not asking a question.
Amelia walked further into the room, crossing her arms over her chest. "Is that an observation from your security detail, or are you checking up on my emotional stability?"
"Both," Lorenzo replied without missing a beat. "In this house, ignorance is a liability. Last night, an encrypted message was intercepted by Marco's team. It originated from a rival faction downtown—the Moretti syndicate."
Amelia’s breath caught slightly, though she forced her expression to remain steady. "What does a rival mob family have to do with me?"
"Everything," Lorenzo said, stepping closer. "Word has spread through the city about Rosa's matchmaking arrangement. The underworld loves a spectacle. To the Morettis, you are not just a guest; you are a perceived weakness—a civilian brought directly into the crosshairs of a war."
"I am not a civilian hostage," Amelia said, her voice rising with sudden, fierce indignation. "And I am certainly not a weakness. If your enemies think they can use me to get to you, they are severely underestimating how stubborn a bookstore owner from Savannah can be."
Lorenzo stared at her, genuinely startled by the fire in her eyes. For a moment, the heavy, oppressive atmosphere of the room seemed to lift. A slow, rare smile touched the corners of his mouth—not the cold, practiced smirk he wore for boardrooms and back-alley meetings, but something raw and genuine.
"Stubborn," he murmured, tasting the word. "Yes. That has been established."
"If you brought me up here to intimidate me into packing my rose-gold suitcase, Mr. Duca, you are wasting your time," Amelia said, holding her ground. "I signed a ninety-day contract. I intend to fulfill every single one of them."
"I didn't bring you up here to intimidate you," Lorenzo replied softly, closing the remaining distance between them until she could feel the heat radiating from his massive frame. "I brought you here to warn you. Because starting today, the rules change. You go nowhere in this city without an armed detail. You speak to no one outside this estate without my clearance."
"And if I refuse?"
"Then I will carry you to the car myself," he said, his deep voice carrying an absolute, terrifying certainty. "And I am quite capable of doing so."
Amelia glared up at him, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs—not from fear, but from the dizzying, dangerous realization of how easily she could fall into the orbit of this formidable man. Before she could retort, a sharp knock echoed at the study door.
Marco pushed the door open without waiting for permission, his face pale and tense.

"Boss," Marco said urgently. "We have a breach at the front gates. It's Victoria."
Lorenzo’s entire demeanor shifted in a fraction of a second. The warmth vanished, replaced by an impenetrable wall of ice.
