Chapter 5 - The Docks at Midnight

The wind off Lake Michigan whipped across the concrete piers of the old shipping yard, carrying the bitter chill of late autumn and the sharp scent of diesel and salt water.

Amelia’s rented sedan idled near the edge of the abandoned warehouse. She killed the engine, stepped out into the freezing wind, and pulled her wool coat tightly around herself. A few yards away, parked under the amber glow of an industrial floodlight, was Lorenzo’s black SUV.

She found him standing near the edge of the concrete pier, staring out into the dark, churning expanse of the lake. His heavy overcoat billowed in the wind, and his hands were shoved deep into his pockets. He didn't turn around when her boots crunched against the gravel, but his broad shoulders stiffened.

Amelia walked slowly until she was standing just a few feet away from him.

"It's freezing out here," she said over the roar of the wind.

"Then go back to the car," Lorenzo replied, his voice flat and detached.

"No."

He finally turned his head, his dark eyes flashing with a dangerous mix of frustration and exhaustion. "Why are you here, Amelia? Did Rosa send you to finish the lecture?"

"Rosa sent me because she's smarter than both of us," Amelia said, stepping closer despite the biting cold. "She told me what you think of yourself. And she told me how wrong I was."

Lorenzo stared at her, his jaw tightening. "You weren't wrong. Society has very specific rules about who belongs on the arm of a man like me, and who gets hidden away. You saw the tabloids. You know what they say."

"I don't give a damn about what the tabloids say, Lorenzo!" Amelia snapped, her voice cutting sharply through the wind.

He blinked, visibly startled by the use of his first name.

"Do you think I care about your money, or your syndicate, or what some blonde socialite thinks of my size?" Amelia stepped right up to him, looking straight up into his severe, rugged face. "I've spent my entire life being judged by people who think my body is an invitation for their opinions. I came to Chicago expecting a cage, expecting a man who would treat me like a transaction. Instead, I found a man who gave me a key, who protected me without asking for anything in return, and who looked at me like I was the only person in the room."

Lorenzo’s chest rose and fell in a sharp, heavy breath. He reached out slowly, his large, calloused hand cupping the side of her face. His thumb brushed softly across her cheekbone, wiping away a tear she hadn't realized was falling.

"Amelia..." he whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "I am not a gentle man. My world is violent, complicated, and dark. If you stay... enemies will come after you. They will try to use you to break me."

"Then let them try," Amelia said fiercely, leaning her cheek deeper into his warm palm. "Because the only thing that would actually break me is walking away from the first man who ever looked at me and saw a Queen instead of a compromise."

For a fraction of a second, Lorenzo stared at her as if he couldn't believe the words were real. Then, with a low, ragged sound that was half-gasp, half-groan, he pulled her completely against his massive chest.

His arms wrapped around her with an intensity that squeezed the breath from her lungs, holding her as though she were the only real thing in a world made of ghosts. He buried his face in her hair, his shoulders trembling slightly against the bitter wind.

And right there, on the cold concrete pier at midnight, the most feared man in Chicago forgot how to be a boss, and simply learned how to be loved.
