PART 1: THE CRACKS IN THE MARBLE

The lead paramedic, a veteran named Marcus Vance, kept his eyes fixed on the grand spiral staircase, then looked back down at Emily Whitmore’s unmoving body. Something wasn't lining up. Caleb Whitmore’s frantic, grieving-husband routine was loud, but to a man who spent twenty years reading crime scenes disguised as accidents, it felt entirely performative.

"You said she slipped near the top of the landing, Mr. Whitmore?" Marcus asked, his voice steady as he positioned an oxygen mask over Emily's pale face.

"Yes! Yes, she was hysterical, pacing back and forth," Caleb sobbed, burying his face in his hands, though his fingers were parted just enough to watch the second paramedic check Emily's vitals. "We were arguing about—about stupid registry items for the twins. She lost her footing. It happened so fast."

"Funny," Marcus muttered under his breath, adjusting the gurney. "If she fell from the top of a twelve-foot marble staircase, the impact trauma should be chaotic. Her injuries are heavily concentrated on the back of her skull, yet her necklace was ripped from the front, and these pearls are scattered in a straight line away from where you claim she landed."

Caleb’s sobbing ceased for a fraction of a second. A cold, venomous glare flashed across his eyes before he quickly forced a fresh wave of tears. "Are you accusing me of something while my wife and unborn children are dying? Do your damn job and save them!"

As the team lifted Emily onto the gurney, a sudden, sharp gasp echoed through the room. It didn't come from Emily, but from the heart monitor. A faint, erratic blip.

"We've got a pulse! It’s weak, but she’s fighting," the second paramedic yelled. "But the babies' heart rates are dropping fast. We need to move, now!"

Caleb felt a sudden jolt of pure terror strike his spine. She was alive. If Emily woke up, if she spoke even a single word to the authorities, his empire, his freedom, and his life would vanish. As they wheeled her out into the torrential Chicago rain toward the waiting ambulance, Caleb climbed into the front seat, his mind racing. He needed Vanessa to finish what he started, and he needed to figure out how Jack and Ryan Bennett—two dead men walking—were somehow tied to his wife.
