Chapter 4 - The ConfrontationThe confrontation inside the study was swift and decisive.

My father laid out the printed photos of James’s handwritten checklist, the teacher’s report, and the legal documentation my attorney had prepared.

"You thought you were clever, didn't you?" my father said, leaning over the desk as James sat rigid in the chair. "You thought you could alienate my daughter from her child and convince her own family that she was losing her mind?"

James tried to maintain his composed facade. "You're taking this completely out of context, Arthur. Those notes were just thoughts on how to make the transition easier for Annie—"

"Don't lie to me!" my father barked, slamming his hand on the desk. "I know a calculating manipulator when I see one. You've been undermining Colette for months!"

I stepped into the study, resting my hand on my stomach, my voice steady and unwavering.

"It's over, James," I said softly. "The doctor, the school, my family, and my lawyer all know what you've been doing. You are not going to isolate me from my children. Not today, not when the baby comes, not ever."

James looked at me, his mask completely shattering. The smooth, charming husband vanished, replaced by a cold, bitter stranger.

"You think you can handle two kids on your own?" James sneered, dropping all pretense of concern. "You're thirty-six weeks pregnant, Colette. You can barely walk up the stairs without gasping for breath."

"I would rather walk up those stairs alone on my hands and knees," I replied, "than let you teach my daughter that my love is something she has to be afraid of."

My father pointed toward the door. "Pack a bag, James. You are staying at a hotel until the legal separation papers are drawn up."

James stood up, smoothing his shirt, his jaw tight. He looked at me with cold fury. "You're making a massive mistake."

"The only mistake I made," I said as he walked past me, "was taking five years to realize who you really were."
