Chapter 6 - A Bright New SunSix months later.

The morning sun poured warmly through the kitchen windows of our new, bright townhouse near the park.
The divorce and custody proceedings had concluded two weeks prior. Supported by the overwhelming evidence of emotional alienation and the testimony of Annie's school teacher, the court awarded me primary physical custody, granting James limited, supervised visitation until he completed mandatory parenting classes and counseling.
On the kitchen island sat a fresh stack of children's books, a bowl of strawberries, and two small dinosaur plates.
Leo was giggling in his high chair, babbling happily as he mashed a piece of banana in his hands. Annie sat beside him, wearing her favorite bright yellow dress, carefully feeding him tiny spoonfuls of applesauce with a plastic spoon.
"Open wide, Leo!" Annie giggled as her little brother opened his mouth obediently. "Good boy!"
I walked over with a warm cup of coffee, leaning down to kiss the top of Annie's head and nuzzling Leo’s chubby cheek.
"Look, Mommy!" Annie said proudly, holding up the spoon. "I'm helping Leo, but I'm not leaving room between us!"
I smiled, pulling a chair close to both of them and wrapping one arm around Annie’s shoulders while wiping applesauce off Leo’s chin with my other hand.

"That's right, sweetie," I said, holding them both tight against my heart. "There are no lines in this house. We are all on the very same side."
Annie beamed, leaning her head securely against my ribs as Leo babbled happily. The dark shadow that had once threatened to tear our bond apart was gone forever, replaced by the warm, unbreakable light of a mother’s endless love.
