Chapter 4 - The Lake Forest GalaThe Moretti estate was a sprawling Gothic mansion situated on fifty acres of dense, dark woods overlooking Lake Michigan. Lit by rows of flaming torches along the winding cobblestone driveway, the mansion resembled a fortress from a bygone era.

A sleek black limousine pulled up to the grand front entrance. The valet opened the door, and Luca Bellanti stepped out, looking regal in a tailored black tuxedo. He turned and extended his hand toward the open door.
Mara took his hand and stepped out onto the gravel drive.
She wore a breathtaking emerald-green silk gown that clung to her curves before flowing smoothly to the floor. Her dark curls were pinned back gracefully, exposing the long line of her neck and simple diamond drop earrings—a gift from Luca’s personal collection. She looked stunning, powerful, and entirely out of place for a woman who spent her mornings knee-deep in floral stems and soil.
Luca looked down at her, his dark eyes lingering on her face. “You take my breath away, Mara.”
“Don't get distracted, Bellanti,” Mara murmured, leaning close to him as she slid her arm through his. “We’re entering the lion’s den.”
“Let the lion worry about who’s hunting whom,” Luca replied smoothly.
Together, they walked up the marble steps and entered the grand ballroom. The room was bathed in golden light from massive iron chandeliers. High society figures milled about, sipping champagne and admiring exotic floral displays arranged throughout the space.
At the far end of the room stood Dominic Moretti. He was seventy years old, with silver hair, a manicured beard, and a tailored velvet dinner jacket. He held a glass of scotch, chatting casually with a group of city politicians.
When Moretti turned and saw Luca walking through the entrance—with Mara on his arm—his glass froze halfway to his lips.
“Dominic,” Luca called out, his deep voice carrying effortlessly across the ambient noise of the room. The chatter died instantly. Guests stepped back, creating a wide path between the two men.
Moretti recovered quickly, putting on a warm, artificial smile. “Luca! My boy! What a surprise. We heard rumors of... complications at your event last night. I assumed you would be busy cleaning up loose ends.”
“I was,” Luca said, stopping ten feet away from the old man. “I spent the morning clearing out the Armand docks. And the afternoon tracing the origin of the poison they tried to use on me.”
Moretti raised an eyebrow, his eyes sliding over to Mara. “I see you brought a charming guest. Is she your new bride, or simply a distraction?”
“She is the woman who unraveled your plot,” Luca declared clearly.
A wave of hushed whispers broke out among the gathered guests.
Mara stepped forward, holding a sleek black leather portfolio. She opened it, revealing clear financial ledgers, shipping manifests, and high-resolution chemical analysis papers bearing the seal of the state lab.
“Apex Agricultural Imports,” Mara said, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. “Registered to a shell account in Zurich, funded directly through the Moretti Trust. You imported forty liters of refined Aconitum extract six weeks ago through Port 42. You delivered it to the Armands to eliminate Luca, frame my shop, and force a war that would leave you in control of the entire Midwest shipping grid.”
Moretti’s warm smile completely vanished, replaced by a cold, venomous glare. “You bring a low-born florist into my home to toss wild accusations? You have no standing here, girl.”
“She has my standing,” Luca growled, stepping up beside Mara, his physical presence towering over the room. “And she has the backing of the entire Bellanti network. The Commission has already received these documents, Dominic. As we speak, your assets in Europe are being frozen, and your lieutenants are surrendering their posts.”
Moretti’s face twisted in rage. He realized in an instant that he had been completely outmaneuvered. He reached into his velvet jacket, pulling out a small silver revolver.
Women screamed, and guests scrambled back toward the doors.
Before Moretti could raise the barrel, Luca moved with terrifying speed. He closed the distance in a heartbeat, grabbing Moretti’s wrist and twisting it violently downward. The gun clattered to the marble floor. Luca slammed the old man against a heavy mahogany pillar, holding him by the throat.
“You brought poison into my family’s life,” Luca whispered, his voice dripping with lethal coldness. “You used Ariana’s memory as a weapon. You are finished, Dominic. You will spend the rest of your miserable life in a maximum-security federal facility, stripped of every cent you ever stole.”
Luca released him, letting the old man slump to the floor, gasping for breath. Outside, the sirens of federal law enforcement vehicles began to wail, echoing through the dark woods surrounding the estate.
Luca turned his back on Moretti, walking over to Mara. He extended his hand once more.

“Shall we leave?” he asked quietly.
Mara looked at him, then down at his hand. She took it, feeling the strength and safety in his touch. “Let’s go home.”
