Chapter 4 - The Ghost of Las LomasThe soft pop-pop of the suppressed pistol was almost entirely swallowed by the roar of the rain and the crashing timbers of the burning house.

Victoria collapsed onto the gravel drive without a sound. Julián let out a strangled gasp, his eyes wide with shock, before sliding down the side of the SUV, his hands clutching his chest.

Elena pulled Camila deeper into the shadow of the greenhouse, her hand firmly pressed over the little girl’s mouth to stifle her scream.

Dr. Vance lowered the weapon, stepping over Julián’s body without a second glance. He turned to his two tactical guards.

"Search the gardens," Vance ordered calmly, adjusting his leather gloves. "Find the old woman and the child. Secure the hard drive. If you find them alive, bring the child to the van. The old woman does not leave this property."

"Yes, Sir," the two men replied in unison, pulling heavy tactical flashlights and silenced sidearms from their jackets.

The guards split up, their bright LED beams cutting through the heavy rain, sweeping across the garden beds, the fountain, and the rows of stone arches leading toward the forest.

Elena felt a cold, calm stillness settle over her spirit. The fear that had consumed her for the past two hours vanished, replaced by an ancient, primal instinct to protect her bloodline. She was no longer just an old woman grieving a lost son; she was the last defense for a helpless child.

She looked around the interior of the greenhouse.

It was her personal sanctuary—a seventy-foot glass structure filled with rare orchids, heavy iron garden tools, sacks of soil, and glass bottles of concentrated nitrogen fertilizer.

"Camila," Elena whispered into the girl's ear, her tone firm and steady. "Do you see that metal door at the back of the greenhouse? The one that leads to the old composting pit?"

Camila nodded, her eyes wide.

"I need you to crawl along the floor beneath the flower benches. Go out that door, crawl through the drainage ditch, and keep going until you hit the main highway. If a car comes, do not hide—stand in the middle of the road and wave your arms. Do you understand?"

"What about you, Grandma?" Camila whimpered.

"I am right behind you," Elena lied smoothly, smiling softly at her granddaughter. "Now go. Fast and quiet, like a little mouse."

Camila dropped to her hands and knees, sliding silently beneath the iron benches, disappearing into the dark foliage of the greenhouse.

Elena stood up. She did not try to hide.

She grabbed a heavy iron spade resting against the potting table, picked up an open lantern from the workstation, and smashed it against a pile of dry peat moss and open bags of chemical fertilizer.

The mixture caught instantly, thick black smoke billowing up toward the glass ceiling of the greenhouse.

Outside, one of the tactical guards caught the sudden light. "Dr. Vance! Over here! In the glasshouse!"

Footsteps crunched heavily on the gravel path.

Elena stepped out from behind a large potted palm tree, standing directly in the center aisle of the greenhouse, holding the iron spade like a battleaxe.

The guard burst through the double glass doors, his gun raised, his tactical light blinding her. "Freeze! Put your hands on your head!"

"You are trespassing on my home," Elena said, her voice dropping into a deep, booming command that echoed off the glass walls.

Before the guard could process her words, Elena slammed the iron spade down onto a high-pressure brass water valve mounted on the wall beside her.

The valve shattered. A massive jet of high-pressure water erupted into the room, striking the overhead lighting grid.

SPARK!

A blinding arc of electricity exploded across the wet metal ceiling. The wiring shorted out, raining showers of white-hot sparks down onto the dry, chemical-soaked peat moss below.

The entire interior of the greenhouse erupted into a localized fireball.

The guard screamed, blinded by the sudden explosion of light and steam, stumbling backward through the shattered glass doors.

Elena threw her weight against the side emergency exit, tumbling out into the torrential rain on the far side of the structure, away from the driveway.

She was soaked, her face covered in soot, her arms bleeding from flying glass fragments, but she kept moving. She ran along the outer stone wall, her heart pounding against her ribs, following the line of the drainage ditch toward the main highway.

Behind her, Dr. Vance’s smooth, calm voice raised in rare anger: "Spread out! She’s moving toward the boundary fence! Do not let her reach the road!"

Elena pushed her legs faster than she had moved in thirty years. Branches whipped against her face, thick mud pulled at her shoes, but through the dark trees ahead, she could see the flickering yellow lights of the mountain highway.

And then she heard a sound that made her heart leap into her throat.

A child’s scream.
