The summer sun streamed brightly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my newly renovated corner office at Vance Tech's headquarters.
On the corner of my desk sat a brand-new, modern desk lamp—sleek, minimalist, and completely solid, crafted from brushed aluminum with zero hidden compartments. It had been custom-made by an independent artisan in Chicago, certified clean by three separate security sweeps.
A quiet knock sounded at the door, and Chloe stepped inside, holding a leather portfolio.
Following her cooperation with the federal authorities, Chloe had received full immunity from criminal prosecution. As part of her restitution and fresh start, I had reassigned her to head our firm's new Workforce Protection & Pension Audit Division—a corporate watchdog group designed to ensure that subsidiary workers were never again exploited by predatory private equity firms.
"Morning, boss," Chloe said, placing a signed audit report on my desk. "The Midwest division's new manufacturing line went live this morning. Over four hundred former workers—including my father—have been officially rehired with full pension benefits."
I signed the approval form and handed it back to her with a warm smile. "How's your father doing?"
"He's doing great," she said, her eyes shining with genuine gratitude. "He told me to tell you that the new machinery you approved is running ten percent faster than the old setup."
"Tell him to keep up the good work," I replied.
Chloe turned to leave, then paused at the door, looking back at the desk. "You know... I still feel terrible about that lamp."
