Chapter 3 - The Trap at the GalaThe grand annual charity gala for the Kane Hospitality Foundation was the social event of the winter season. Held in the historic crystal ballroom on the ground floor of the Whitcomb Grand, it was a swirling sea of glittering diamonds, expensive champagne, and cutthroat corporate politics.

Upstairs in the penthouse, Odessa was helping Theo straighten his black silk tie.
Her fingers brushed against his collar, adjusting the knot with practiced care. In the past week, their relationship had shifted from a guest-and-employee dynamic into something far more intimate—a quiet alliance forged in the dark corners of a corrupt empire.
“You don't have to go down there tonight,” Odessa murmured, smoothing his lapel. “Your uncle Richard is going to use the stage to announce the restructuring of the board. They’re going to try to push you out completely.”
“Let them try,” Theo replied, a cold, dangerous smile playing on his lips. He reached up, his large hand gently catching her wrist before she could pull away. His thumb brushed the pulse point on her skin. “Besides, I need my head housekeeper down there with me.”
Odessa’s breath hitched. “Mr. Kane—I’m on the cleaning staff. I don't belong in the crystal ballroom.”
“Tonight, you aren't a maid, Odessa,” he said, his blind eyes locked onto hers with absolute certainty. “Tonight, you’re my guest of honor. And I brought something for you.”
He turned to the bed behind him, where a long garment bag lay zipped shut. He unzipped it with a smooth motion and lifted out a breathtaking emerald-green silk dress that looked like it had been pulled straight from a high-end Fifth Avenue boutique.
Odessa stepped back, shaking her head. “No. No, Theo—I can’t wear that. Where did you even—?”
“My mother’s,” he said quietly, the shadows of the past crossing his features for a brief second. “She never got to wear it to this particular gala. And it would look extraordinary on you.”
Before Odessa could argue, a knock sounded at the door.
It was Marcus, Theo’s fiercely loyal, retired-Marine bodyguard, holding a small velvet box and a pair of matching heels. “Mr. Kane, the car is waiting downstairs, and the board has just taken their seats.”
Theo nodded, turning back to Odessa. “Change, Odessa. We have an empire to reclaim.”
Thirty minutes later, when Odessa stepped out of the private bedroom, the transformation was staggering. The emerald silk hugged her slender frame, the rich color setting off her dark hair and warm skin. She felt like an imposter stepping into a fairy tale she hadn't earned, but as she looked at Theo standing tall in his tuxedo, she saw something in his face that quieted her panic.
Approval. And a fierce, unspoken pride.
When they descended the private elevator into the lower lobby, the buzz of the gala hit them like a wave of warm air.
As Theo Kane walked into the crystal ballroom with Odessa Callaway on his arm, the room went utterly, deafeningly silent.
Flashbulbs popped. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wind through dry reeds. Richard Kane, standing near the stage with a glass of champagne in his hand, choked on his drink, his face turning an alarming shade of purple.
Sarah Merritt, standing near the service doors with a tray of canapés, dropped a silver fork with a sharp clatter.
Richard hurried forward, his smile tight and venomous. “Theo! My boy. We didn't expect you to grace us with your presence tonight. And... ah, who is your charming companion? One of the charity board members?”
Theo didn't release Odessa’s hand. He stepped forward, his posture radiating absolute authority.
“Uncle Richard,” Theo said, his voice echoing cleanly over the ballroom’s sound system. “Allow me to introduce Miss Odessa Callaway. She is not a charity board member. She is the head of internal quality control for Kane Hospitality Group—effective as of five minutes ago.”
Richard’s smile vanished entirely. “Quality control? We don't have a—what is the meaning of this, Theo? You’re bringing hotel staff into a high-level donor event?”
“Staff?” Theo stepped closer, his blind gaze fixed directly on his uncle’s panicked face. “No, Richard. Staff are the people who keep our hotels running while executives like you embezzle corporate funds through shell companies in the Caymans.”
The ballroom erupted into absolute chaos.
Cameras flashed frantically. Reporters from the Chicago Tribune surged forward, their recorders capturing every word.
“You’re out of your mind,” Richard hissed, his voice trembling with rage. “Security! Remove this—this woman and her deranged boss immediately!”
“Security answers to me, Richard,” a deep voice boomed from the doorway.

Marcus stepped into the room, flanked by two federal agents holding thick federal subpoena folders.
“Richard Kane,” one of the agents announced loudly, holding up a warrant. “You are under federal investigation for securities fraud, embezzlement, and corporate espionage. Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”
