Chapter 3 - Bloodline and Betrayal

The morning light broke through the heavy rain clouds over Westchester County, casting a soft, golden glow across the estate grounds.
By six in the morning, Nathaniel had not slept a single second.
He sat on the floor of his private study, his expensive suit jacket discarded on the armchair, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. Spread out across the carpet were wooden building blocks, picture books, and a half-empty glass of milk.
Lily sat between his legs, happily stacking blue and yellow blocks into a tower, giggling every time Nathaniel pretended to be surprised when it fell over.
Clara sat nearby in an armchair, wrapped in a warm wool blanket Margaret Hale had brought up an hour earlier.
Margaret, the estate manager, stood near the locked study doors. Her eyes were red-rimmed with tears. She had been with the Cole family for thirty years, and she had watched Nathaniel turn into a ghost after Eleanor’s death. Seeing him now—smiling, laughing softly, holding a tiny hand in his—felt like watching a man resurrected from the dead.
"I've contacted Dr. Vance, our private family physician," Margaret whispered to Nathaniel. "He will be here in twenty minutes with a mobile laboratory kit to perform the discreet paternity test, just to have the formal legal documentation prepared for the courts."
"I don't need a test to know my own blood, Margaret," Nathaniel said softly, his fingers gently smoothing Lily’s soft curls. "Look at her hands. She has Eleanor’s fingers. She has my eyes."
He looked up at Clara.
"How did you survive for three years?" Nathaniel asked, his tone filled with deep, aching guilt. "Where were you living?"
"Small towns," Clara replied softly. "Diner jobs, night shifts, cleaning motels. I moved every six months. I was terrified Julian’s people would trace us. But three weeks ago, my savings ran out completely. Lily got sick with a high fever, and I had to spend my last three hundred dollars on her medicine and hospital visit."
She wiped a dry tear from her cheek.
"I saw an anonymous posting on a private domestic staffing agency website for a housekeeper position at the Cole estate in Westchester. I knew it was dangerous to come here. But I also knew... I knew I was running out of time. I wanted Lily to be near her home, even if she didn't know it."
Nathaniel stood up, picked Lily up in his arms, and walked over to Clara’s chair.
He dropped to one knee beside her, looking into her tired face.
"You protected my daughter for three years," Nathaniel said, his voice thick with emotion. "You starved so she could eat. You hid in the dark so she could be safe. You owe this family nothing, Clara. From this second onward, you will never wear that uniform again. You are my sister-in-law. You are part of this family."
"Nathaniel..." Clara began, her voice shaking. "Julian still controls half the board. He has security teams monitoring your corporate communications. If he finds out—"
"Julian is a dead man walking," Nathaniel interrupted, his eyes hardening into solid gray steel. "He took my wife from me. He tried to destroy my child. He spent three years enjoying the fruits of Eleanor’s murder. I am going to tear down everything he built, piece by piece."
Before he could continue, the internal intercom on his desk chimed sharply.
Margaret walked over and pressed the button. "Yes?"
"Mrs. Hale, excuse the early interruption," the front gate guard’s voice echoed through the speaker. "We have a vehicle at the main iron gate. It’s Mr. Julian Cole. He says he needs to see Mr. Nathaniel urgently regarding an emergency board meeting called for nine o'clock."
A cold, deadly stillness settled over the room.
Clara gasped, instinctively reaching out for Lily. Lily sensed the tension and whimpered slightly, pressing her face into Nathaniel’s neck.
Nathaniel did not panic. He slowly stood up, placing a reassuring hand on Clara’s shoulder.
"Margaret," Nathaniel commanded calmly. "Take Clara and Lily up to the master bedroom suite. Lock the heavy oak doors from the inside. Do not open them for anyone except me."
"Nathaniel, no," Clara begged, grabbing his sleeve. "Don't face him alone! He's dangerous!"
May you like
Nathaniel looked down at his tiny daughter, kissing her soft cheek, then looked back at Clara.
"He was dangerous when I was a broken man who had nothing left to lose," Nathaniel said, a cold, lethal smile touching his lips. "Now I have everything to fight for."
