Chapter 4 - The Sealed Letter

Nathaniel stood by the grand marble fireplace in the main drawing room downstairs, a glass of cold water in his hand.
The heavy front doors of the mansion creaked open, and footsteps echoed across the entryway.
Julian Cole walked into the room. He was forty years old, handsome in a sharp, predatory way, dressed in a three-thousand-dollar Italian suit with a silk tie. He carried a leather briefcase under his arm, his expression a practiced mix of executive authority and artificial concern.
"Nathaniel!" Julian exclaimed, spreading his arms as he walked forward. "I tried calling your private mobile three times this morning. You didn't answer."
"I turned my phone off," Nathaniel said calmly, taking a slow sip of water. "What brings you to Westchester at seven in the morning, Julian?"
Julian stopped near the center rug, eyeing his stepbrother carefully. He frowned slightly. There was something different about Nathaniel today. The dark circles under his eyes were still there, but the hollow, defeated posture was gone. Nathaniel stood tall, broad-shouldered, radiating a terrifying, dormant power.
"We have a crisis," Julian said, setting his briefcase on the coffee table. "The Federal Securities Commission just issued an informal subpoena regarding the offshore acquisitions in Cayman account 402. The board is in a panic. I need you to sign over temporary executive voting rights to me so I can handle the auditors without dragging your name through the mud."
Julian pulled a thick legal document from his briefcase and laid a golden fountain pen beside it.
"Just sign here, brother," Julian said smoothly. "I'll handle the press. I'll handle the lawyers. You can stay here in the quiet, where you belong."
Nathaniel looked down at the document.
"Account 402," Nathaniel murmured quietly. "That was the account Eleanor was asking about three days before her crash."
Julian’s posture froze for a fraction of a second. His smile stiffened. "Eleanor? Nathaniel, why are you bringing up Eleanor? That was three years ago. You know she was stressed about the pregnancy... she wasn't thinking clearly."
"She was thinking with absolute clarity," Nathaniel said, taking a step toward Julian. "She knew you were stealing sixty million dollars from the pension fund. She knew you forged my signature on the shell company transfers."
Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits. The friendly stepbrother facade vanished completely, replaced by a cold, sharp arrogance.
"Nathaniel, you're having a mental breakdown," Julian said softly, reaching into his coat pocket. "You've been isolated in this tomb for too long. I'm going to call Dr. Vance and have him arrange a medical stay for you—"
"She survived the crash, Julian," Nathaniel said.
Julian froze.
"What did you say?" Julian whispered.
"Eleanor crawled out of that burning car," Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly quiet whisper. "She gave birth to our daughter in a clinic in New Jersey. And before she died, she gave her sister proof of everything you did."
Julian’s face turned gray. His hand inside his jacket tightened.
"Her sister..." Julian repeated, realizing his mistake. "The housekeeper... the new girl the agency placed here..."
"Her name is Clara," Nathaniel growled. "And Eleanor’s daughter—my daughter—is upstairs right now."
Julian let out a harsh, bitter laugh. He slowly pulled his hand out of his suit coat. In his palm was a small, high-caliber silver pistol.
"You always were too sentimental, Nathaniel," Julian hissed, raising the weapon. "I spent ten years playing second fiddle to you! I built that company while you played the happy family man! I tried to get rid of Eleanor quietly, but she was too smart for her own good. And now you want to hand my empire over to a bastard child and a penniless waitress?"
Julian pulled back the hammer of the gun with a sharp clack.
"No one knows I'm here," Julian sneered. "The gate guards think I came alone for a business meeting. I'll shoot you, clear out the staff, burn this mausoleum to the ground, and blame it on an electrical fire. I've done it before."
"You won't get the chance," a voice called out from the balcony above.
Julian spun around, pointing his gun toward the grand staircase.
Clara stood at the top of the stairs. In her hands, she held a heavy black digital drive connected to an encrypted tablet.
"Eleanor didn't just give me Lily," Clara shouted, her voice echoing through the high ceilings. "She recorded your confession on her phone while you threatened her in her office! She uploaded the audio files, the bank routing numbers, and the wire transfers directly to an off-site cloud server!"
"Give me that drive!" Julian screamed, taking a step toward the stairs.

"It's already gone, Julian," Nathaniel’s voice cut through the air behind him.
Julian turned back—just in time to see Nathaniel’s fist flying straight toward his face.
