Chapter 6 - A Home Made of Laughter

One year later.
The Moretti mansion was no longer known as the coldest house in New York.
It was known as the house of laughter.
The formal dining room table, once reserved for dark corporate meetings, was now covered in children’s drawings, wooden toy blocks, and colorful plastic plates. The quiet marble hallways echoed daily with the sound of running feet, cheerful shouts, and music.
It was a warm Sunday evening.
A gentle breeze blew through the open glass doors of the library, carrying the scent of summer roses into the room.
Gabriel sat in a large velvet armchair near the window. He was thirty-nine years old, but he looked younger now than he had two years ago. The dark circles under his eyes were gone, replaced by fine lines around his eyes from smiling.
Sitting in his lap was three-year-old Liam, who was fast asleep, cuddling his worn blue rabbit.
On the floor rug, Leo and Lucas were busy constructing a massive fort out of sofa cushions with Marco, who had become a doting uncle to the three boys.
Emma sat on the matching sofa, wearing a comfortable yellow sundress, her hair falling loosely around her shoulders. She was resting one hand gently over her soft, rounded stomach—where a tiny new life had begun to grow three months ago.
Gabriel looked at his wife, his heart overflowing with a warmth so immense it felt like a flame inside his chest.
He reached down to the small side table, picking up the old, worn leather-bound notebook.
He opened it to the very last page.
Beneath all of Emma’s tender notes from the past two years, Gabriel had written a single entry in his dark blue ink earlier that morning:
To anyone who walks through these doors: This house was once saved not by guns, money, or power, but by a woman who refused to let grief win. She taught a broken man how to love again, and she taught three motherless boys how to laugh.
Emma Brooks did not just raise my sons.
She saved my life.
Emma looked up from the sofa, catching Gabriel’s warm, devoted gaze. She offered him a soft, radiant smile that lit up the entire room.
Gabriel set the notebook down, holding sleeping Liam securely against his chest, and extended his free hand to his wife.

Emma stood up, walked over to his chair, and slid her fingers into his, leaning down to press a soft kiss against his lips.
Outside, the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the New York sky in brilliant shades of gold, violet, and crimson. Inside, the Moretti home was filled with light, warmth, and a love that would last for a lifetime.
